Israel threatens large-scale operation against the al-Sharaa government

The Israeli army is studying the option of carrying out a large-scale operation against the regime of Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, while also investigating the possibility that sensitive information was leaked following the Beit Jinn operation in the countryside of Damascus.

Thirteen civilians, including women and children, were killed and 24 others were injured in the Israeli army’s shelling of the town of Beit Jinn (a town in the southwestern countryside of Damascus, near the occupied Syrian Golan Heights) at dawn on Friday, while six Israeli soldiers were wounded in the clashes.

The shelling came after the Israeli army infiltrated the town to arrest a number of young men, which led to clashes between young men from the town and the Israeli army.

Israeli narratives later diverged over who carried out the attacks. Israel initially said those targeted were linked to the Islamic Group in Lebanon (al-Jama’a al-Islamiyya), then later accused Syrian intelligence of being behind the attacks.

    Large-scale operation

According to Israel’s Channel 13, Israel is seeking to change its tactics in Syria, moving from field arrests to aerial assassinations.

The channel quoted sources on the evening of Friday, 28 November, as saying that the Israeli army is considering launching a large-scale operation against President Ahmad al-Sharaa’s regime, if it discovers that any of his men were involved in the clashes.

The Beit Jinn incident may push the Israeli army to change its approach along the Syrian border to protect its soldiers, by reducing ground arrest operations and intensifying aerial assassination operations.

Later, Israel accused Syrian intelligence of being behind the attacks on its soldiers during the clashes in the town of Beit Jinn in the countryside of Damascus, while the Syrian Foreign Ministry said that civilians were the ones who confronted the infiltrating force.

Israel’s public broadcaster, Kan, quoted unnamed security sources as saying that some of the individuals involved in planning armed attacks inside Syrian territory work directly with the General Intelligence Directorate affiliated with President Ahmad al-Sharaa.

According to these sources, these groups do not limit themselves to attempts to target Israeli army forces near the border, but also seek to carry out attacks against residents of the Druze town of Hadar with the aim of creating religious and local tensions that can be exploited politically and in security terms in southern Syria, according to these claims.

    Possibility of information leak

The Israeli website Walla quoted officials in the Israeli army’s Northern Command as saying that the army had begun investigating the possibility of a sensitive information leak within the 210th Division ahead of the arrest operation in Beit Jinn on Syrian territory.

According to officers cited by the website, the operation to arrest the main suspect and his brother was carried out, and shortly before the Israeli force left the village, it came under a “planned ambush that involved heavy gunfire, and given the circumstances of the incident, there is suspicion that the operation’s information was leaked and exposed by hostile elements inside Syrian territory,” as the website put it. This possibility is now under investigation.

Officials in the Israeli Northern Command sharply criticized the deployment of the forces that were surprised by the ambush in Syria, which forced them to abandon a military jeep, a Hummer, “in the heart of the area”.

    “Full-fledged war crime”

The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Syria condemns “the criminal and flagrant assault” that led to direct clashes after residents of the town confronted the attacking patrol and forced it to withdraw from Syrian territory.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates stressed that after the failure of its incursion, the occupation forces proceeded to target the town of Beit Jinn with what it called “brutal and deliberate shelling that constitutes a full-fledged war crime”, after the Israeli forces “committed a horrific massacre” that claimed the lives of more than ten civilians, including women and children, and caused a large displacement movement as a result of the continued “barbaric and deliberate” shelling of the homes of civilians, according to the statement.

A number of states and organizations condemned the Israeli attacks on the town of Beit Jinn in the countryside of Damascus, including Britain, Turkey, Kuwait, the Arab League, the Gulf Cooperation Council, the United Nations, Qatar, Jordan, the Palestinian movements Hamas and Islamic Jihad, and the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria.
