ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A new bill could boost Social Security benefits for widowed and surviving divorced spouses.
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand introduced the Surviving Income Fair Treatment (SWIFT) Act in Washington, D.C. Wednesday alongside several senators.
The bill would expand benefits for over one million Americans by removing outdated caps and restrictions. It would allow widowed and surviving divorced spouses with disabilities to get all of the survivor benefits they are entitled to regardless of age.
The bill would also expand child-in-care benefits for widowed and surviving divorced spouses caring for children.
The legislation has backing from major senior and labor groups, including the Alliance for Retired Americans, The Arc of the United States, the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, and more.
