The loss was the second in a row for the Rams (4-2), who won their first four games of the season. CSU will face the loser of Wednesday’s late game between Wichita State and St. Mary’s at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
CSU trailed 33-26 at halftime after the Hokies used a 14-2 run late in the first half to overcome an early lead by the Rams. CSU was able to keep the game close for much of the second half and pulled with a point at 49-48 after a layup by Rashaan Mbemba with 7:08 to play.
The Rams pulled within a point two more times in the closing minutes, the last time on a 3-pointer by Pascarelli with 2:42 remaining that made it 60-59. With 24 seconds left, Jevin Muniz made a 3-pointer to make it a two-point game at 66-64.
With 16 seconds on the clock, the Hokies missed a free throw, and Kyle Jorgensen grabbed the rebound for CSU. The Rams advanced the ball and Pascarelli pulled up for a game-winning 3-pointer with three seconds remaining but missed.
In addition to Booth’s 15 points, Mbemba added 12 in his second game back from an injury and Jorgensen had 11.
CSU went into the game as the fourth-best 3-point shooting team in the country but only made four of 19 against the Hokies. CSU did score 44 points in the paint in the loss.
