Rockstar Josh Homme revealed something shocking.
The frontman of Queens of the Stone Age spoke with Stereogum on Wednesday to speak about his experience performing in the Paris Catacombs for their concert film Alive in the Catacombs. This made them the first band permitted to perform in the underground ossuary that holds the remains of over six million people. Filmed in July 2024, the video was released almost a year later on June 5, then the EP of the recording was released on streaming sites eight days later.
On the same topic of death, Homme revealed an experience he had when he was 12 years old, after interviewer Rachel Brown asked him when he learned what death was.

"My first real death experience was almost dying myself, at like 12, almost drowning," Homme started off his story. "[I felt] really positive about not dying. The afterglow of that, sort of radiating, and saying 'Oh, I'm not dead, and this is working out great.'"
Homme, who is now 52 years old, revealed this happened in Lake Ponderay in Idaho, where he got into a solo boating accident and was thrown off the boat. He was fully clothed, and there was a storm.
"At one point, [I was] thinking, 'I don't think I can swim..I think I can't swim more than this,' and then being sort of rescued right at that moment," he said. "But the sort of calm of saying to yourself, 'It's ok. I think it's okay.'"
Then, he revealed that he was saved by "this guy [pulling] me by my hair and underwear" because he stripped down to nothing while he was trying to swim. Homme joked that "he gave [him] the most enormous wedgie that I've ever known," to lighten up the mood.
"There is sort of this elation, post that," he concluded. "I remember thinking, 'I'm just going to do what I want to do. I don't think I should wait and just do what everyone else says, you know?'"

— Stereogum (@stereogum) November 26, 2025Now, Homme is a very well-known singer-songwriter in the rock world and the founder and only continuous member of Queens of the Stone Age, which he formed in 1996 shortly after the breakup of his previous band Kyuss. In almost 30 years as a band, they have released eight studio albums, one live album and three EPs.
Queens of the Stone Age gained mainstream popularity in the early 2000s, primarily with their 2000 album, Rated R, and their 2002 follow-up, Songs for the Deaf. Rated R was a critical success and produced the hit single "The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret," while Songs for the Deaf significantly boosted their success even more with their singles like "No One Knows" and "Go with the Flow".

In late August, the band wrapped their The End Is Nero World Tour, which lasted two years and had multiple legs. Last month, it was announced that QOTSA will be the support act for the Foo Fighters' upcoming Take Cover Tour in August 2026, as well as opening for heavy metal band System of a Down in Europe this upcoming summer.
