Eric Dane has made a triumphant return to television following his devastating diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, bringing fans to tears with a powerful appearance on this week's episode of Brilliant Minds.
On the Nov. 24 episode of the long-running procedural, the Grey's Anatomy alum, who was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, earlier this year, gave fans a vulnerable glimpse into his new reality as he portrayed a firefighter learning to acclimate to life with the same diagnosis.
As seen in a clip shared earlier this week by Access Hollywood, Dane guest-starred as firefighter Matthew Ramati, who is struggling to tell his family the news. It marks one of the actor's first roles since he himself was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disorder, and the emotional connection did not go unnoticed by fans.
His honest portrayal had fans gushing over his "brilliant' performance on social media, with one declaring, "He deserves an award for his emotional performance."
"Such a beautiful, heartfelt; yet, heartbreaking episode, knowing that it’s his real journey," another marveled. "The show Brilliant Minds is a phenomenal show, and last night’s episode was brilliant!"
"Eric didn’t act, he gave a courageous, haunting and real life look at ALS," another agreed. "The episode brought me to tears. Thank you Eric Dane and Brilliant Minds for shining a much needed light on ALS."
"This show is so amazing and last night's episode made me cry twice he did such a good job ?? with the ALS story," someone else reiterated. "God bless you Eric??❤️❤️."
Dane Has Been Experiencing Symptoms of ALS for Nearly 2 Years Now
His first indication that something was wrong was weakness in his right hand. “I didn’t really think anything of it at the time,” he said of the symptom. “I thought maybe I had been texting too much and my hand was fatigued.” Nine months later, his neurologist had an answer.
ALS is a progressive disease that leads to the degradation of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. Eventually, it leads to total paralysis, including an inability to speak, while the mind remains aware. There is currently no cure.
More than a year and a half since his symptoms first began, Dane has said he's down to “one functioning arm,” while his "right side has completely stopped working” and his left side is actively becoming weaker.
He's since been spotted using a wheelchair while out and about, though he's assured fans there's no reason to worry at this time, telling them instead to "keep the faith."
He's Not Going Anywhere Anytime Soon
The actor has made it clear he has no intentions of retiring any time soon. In fact, he's made it clear he's determined to fight. He's even spoken with California Congressman Eric Swalwell about the difficulties patients face when it comes to treatment options, revealing that the diagnosis can "preclude [patients] from being part of these clinical trials" and pushing for more access.
Dane told the politician, “I want to ring every bell. I have two daughters at home. I wanna see them graduate college, get married, maybe have grandkids. I wanna be there for all that. So, I’m gonna fight until the last breath on this one.”
