The Chicago Cubs have reportedly added another pitcher before the MLB trade deadline, acquiring Braxton Garrett from the Miami Marlins.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Cubs are acquiring the left-handed starter from Miami after he missed the 2025 season for the Marlins.
In 16 appearances with Triple-A Jacksonville this season, Garrett posted a 4-4 record with a 2.90 ERA, with 83 strikeouts in 77.2 innings of work.
He struggled in two MLB starts, giving up seven earned runs in 4.1 innings in those appearances.
In parts of six MLB seasons, Garrett has a record of 16-20 with a 4.16 ERA.
According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, first base prospect Jonathon Long and pitcher Jace Beck will head to the Marlins in the trade.
Long has hit 12 home runs and driven in 62 RBI’s for Triple-A Iowa this season, slashing .283/.364/.455 in 452 total plate appearances. He was a ninth-round pick of the Cubs in the 2023 MLB Draft.
Beck has split time between Double-A Knoxville and Triple-A Iowa this season, with a 3.62 ERA in 25 total appearances, including nine starts. He has 116 strikeouts in 74.2 innings of work.
