ROCHESTER, N.Y. — DMVs across Monroe County will be closed for the next several Fridays while employees learn and implement a new statewide system.
“The way that we process transactions is going to completely change so in order to provide our particularly sizable staff adequate access to this training, we’re closing down to the public on those Fridays,” said Jamie Romeo, Monroe County Clerk.
Romeo says it was that, or bust the overtime budget and considering this is the somewhat slow season, she’s hoping it’s not too disruptive.
“We’re hoping that with the trends of the past, these next couple weeks because they are typically a little bit slower, we’re not going to see the displacement of that volume,” Romeo said.
The state DMV tells News10NBC it’s replacing a patchwork of outdated computer systems, software and databases and consolidating them under one, modern system. Phase 1 goes live in February.
“It’s all behind the scenes but what’s going to matter is it should make their trips faster, it should make their trips a little bit smoother,” Romeo said.
Juanita Harvey, who was using the DMV, is okay with a little extra annoyance now, if it means a better experience from February on out.
“Go get the training done, that way you won’t have that wait and it’s going to be more convenient so it’s not really going to be a loss,” Harvey said.
You never quite know what to expect when you go to the DMV.
“Usually a walk-in, I had to wait quite a while today,” said Alvin Homner, who was using the DMV.
“We went to another one and it was like really crowded, outrageous so to come here get in and out in, I want to say 15-20 minutes, not bad,” Harvey said.
If you need to make a trip to the DMV in the next few months though, you should check the hours of the one you use before you leave.
Romeo tells News10NBC if the training goes better than expected, it’s possible they can open back up on Fridays early next year but if not, the new system is set to go live in the middle of February and after that, they’ll be back to normal hours of operation.
Each county is handling the training a bit differently. The DMVs in Orleans County, for example, will all be closed on Dec. 3 and then they’ll all close early every Wednesday after that until the state transition is complete.
