For 35 years, Hershey’s Kisses’ beloved “Holiday Bells” commercial has signaled the start of the season for millions of families. Now, for the first time ever, fans can step inside the iconic ad — right in the heart of New York City.
Hershey’s Kisses has signed on as a premier sponsor of NBC’s annual Christmas in Rockefeller Center tree-lighting special, airing live Wednesday, December 3 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC and streaming on Peacock. And to mark the ad’s milestone anniversary, the brand is bringing the magic to life with a brand-new interactive experience that transforms the classic melody into something visitors can play themselves.
From Thursday, Dec. 4 through Sunday, Dec. 7, fans can visit Rockefeller Plaza to try the debut of the Hershey’s Kisses Musical Mat—a large LED installation designed to recreate the handbell-style notes from the original commercial.
Step on a square, and the mat rings out the familiar notes of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” just like the Kisses do in the stop-motion ad. Visitors can play the tune solo, recreate the commercial with friends, or mix it up to create their own holiday melody.
The installation will first appear during NBC’s December 3 tree-lighting special before opening to the public from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
“Hershey’s Kisses is the No. 1 candy of the holiday season, and NBC’s Christmas in Rockefeller Center special is one of the most iconic holiday celebrations in the world,” said Stacy Taffet, Chief Growth Officer at The Hershey Company. “This immersive experience brings them together to ring in the holidays and bring our beloved ‘Holiday Bells’ commercial to life for fans of all ages.”
The “Holiday Bells” commercial first aired in December 1989, born from a spontaneous idea during a shoot for Hershey’s “Whimsy” campaign. John Dunn, Hershey’s brand manager at the time, spearheaded the concept: a simple, 15-second stop-motion animation featuring Hershey’s Kisses acting as handbells.
Directed by animator Carl Willat, the ad features Kisses ringing out “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” — no dialogue, no actors, and no high-tech effects. Just the charm of the moment.
"The simplicity of the spot - no dialogue, no celebrities, just animated Hershey's Kisses -is key to its enduring charm," said Taffet. "It has become one of the most iconic holiday advertisements in American marketing history."
More than three decades later, it remains one of the most recognizable commercials of the season.
