Garth Brooks Once Paused an Entire Album Release — 28 Years Later, the Backstory Still Surprises Fans

Garth Brooks has spent the last few years building one of the busiest stretches of his career. He opened his Friends in Low Places bar in Nashville, wrapped his Las Vegas residency this spring, and announced The Anthology, Part VI: The Comeback, The Next Five Years for a December release. But long before all that, he made one of the boldest moves of his career — he halted one of his own albums.

That album was Sevens, and it finally arrived on November 25, 1997, exactly 28 years ago today, but only after a tense standoff with Capitol Nashville.

Earlier that year, the record had been scheduled for an August release. Retailers had prepped, country radio was waiting, and the album was considered one of the most anticipated releases of the late ’90s.

Then Capitol Nashville went through a major leadership shake-up. Brooks halted the release after executives he’d worked closely with were pushed out, and reports at the time said he refused to move forward until the label resolved its “management and marketing” issues.

So the album stopped in its tracks.

According to Variety, Capitol eventually tapped Pat Quigley to run the division, Brooks approved the change, and the release was reset for November. Only then did Sevens roll out — and when it did, it became an instant powerhouse.

The album debuted at No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums charts, selling nearly 900,000 copies in its first week. “Longneck Bottle,” “Two Piña Coladas,” “She’s Gonna Make It,” and “You Move Me” turned into major hits, and his duet with wife Trisha Yearwood, “In Another’s Eyes,” earned a Grammy. The record eventually went Diamond.

When he’s not turning chart battles into country-music lore, Brooks, 63, is busy being a dad. The award-winning artist shares three daughters with his first wife, Sandy Mahl — Taylor, 33, August, 31, and Allie, 29. As for Yearwood, 61, she doesn’t have children of her own, but after marrying Brooks in 2005, she’s fully embraced her role as a “bonus mom.”
