Country singer David Nail is grieving the loss of his mother, Donna Sue Nail, who passed away on Nov. 18, 2025, at age 73.
On Sunday, Nov. 23, the artist took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news with fans. Nail explained that although he originally intended to keep his emotions private, he felt his mother’s presence during his most recent string of performances. That sense of connection encouraged him to open up to the people who have supported him throughout his career.
In a nine-page emotional slideshow, Nail revealed that he learned of his mother’s passing through a text message from his father, Dennis Nail. The message read, “As of 20 minutes ago, your mother is pain-free.” While he didn’t disclose Donna’s cause of death, Nail included a touching photo of his wife and two of his children resting their hands on Donna’s hand, a moment that appeared to be filled with prayer and tenderness.
Nail, who had spent time with his mother the Sunday before her passing, said he had an inclination that she may not make it through the entire week. Despite knowing her condition, he said the official news of her passing left him in a state of “shock.” So much so that “I don’t even remember what was said after.”
After calling his wife, Catherine, and hearing one of his kids sobbing in the background, Nail says everything else seemed like a blur.
“I don’t even remember pulling off the road or where I was. It was dark and raining hard. I sat off the side of the road, and I sobbed violently for the second time in three days,” he wrote.
The “Whatever She’s Got” singer, 46, described the profound physical and emotional toll of knowing his mother was nearing the end of her life. While visiting her, he explained that he experienced an overwhelming level of grief and a sadness that was so extreme ...I couldn’t feel my legs.”
He Remembers His Mother as Selfless and Strong
Despite his anguish, Nail shared that he could “write for hours” about his mother’s greatness. She was a true matriarch who always put her children and others before herself. One hallmark of her character, he shared, was that she never wanted him to cancel a performance on her behalf. Nail shared that while he had made the trip home to Kennett, Missouri, from Nashville, Tenn., many times, this time would be different.
“I’ve made that drive maybe 100 times over the last 25 years. But I’ve never driven to that town, to that house, without knowing my mother would meet me at the back door from the garage with a hug. This next week will be the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. I’ve realized there’s nothing that can prepare you for this level of loss,” he wrote. “....There is a hole in my heart that I swear I can actually feel missing. I know I’ll never feel the same again. I’m 46 years old, but I feel like a 9-year-old boy….”
According to her obituary, Donna worked as a highly respected secretary to the “Kennett Superintendent and Board of Education before health issues forced her to retire.” She “absolutely adored her grandchildren,” Presley Quarles, Lawson Nail,Lilli Cate Nail, and Ellie Nail. She “loved her role as wife, mother, and grandmother” and “was devoted to her husband,” Dennis, whom she married on January 24, 1970.
