Senate leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) lost his primary and won’t run the chamber next year. But he’s leaving a legacy. Members of his family, former staff members, and former Senate colleagues hold positions of influence throughout government. They are top officials in the executive branch and UNC administrative offices, and sit on important regulatory commissions.
Family
Son Phil Berger Jr. is a Supreme Court justice. He was first elected to the North Carolina Court of Appeals in 2016. Four years later, was elected to the Supreme Court of North Carolina.
Daughter Ashley Berger Snyder is general counsel at the North Carolina Department of Labor.
Son Kevin Berger is on the Rockingham County Board of Commissioners.
Former staff
Jim Blaine, a former Berger chief of staff, is a member of the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees. Blaine and former Berger spokesman Ray Martin run a political consulting firm called The Differentiators. Bob Hall, former Democracy NC executive director, found that a super PAC supporting Berger in the primary, N.C. True Conservatives, paid Blaine and Martin $723,000 for mailers. More than $2 million for advertising went to Strategic Media Delivery LLC, where Martin is the managing member.

Katherine Restrepo Martin, a former Berger policy adviser, is vice president for health affairs at the UNC system.
Amy Auth is a former Berger deputy chief of staff. She is now deputy for external affairs in the state Treasurer’s office.
Brent Woodcox worked for Berger and Senate Republicans in a variety of roles, most recently as senior policy counsel. He is now state Auditor Dave Boliek’s chief of staff.
Randy Brechbiel worked on Berger’s communications staff. He is now Boliek’s spokesman.
Erica Shrader is a former top Berger advisor who is now vice president of corporate affairs at NC Innovation. NC Innovation is a creation of the state Senate that is meant to commercialize research from UNC system schools.
Derrick Welch went to NC Innovation after a stint as Senate majority staff director.
Alex Fagg, a former Berger policy adviser, is director of government relations for the N.C. community college system

The General Assembly created the Collaboratory in 2016 and directs it to conduct studies on a wide range of topics, from education to disaster recovery to pollution.
Matthew Lanetti, a former Berger policy adviser, is deputy director of the NC Collaboratory.
Former Senate colleagues
Former Senator Paul Newton, who was co-chairman of the Finance Committee and the Redistricting and Elections committee, resigned his seat to become vice chancellor and general counsel at UNC Chapel Hill.
Harry Brown, former Senate majority leader under Berger, is a member of the UNC Board of Governors.
Former Senator Woody White is a member of the UNC Board of Governors.
Former Senator Tommy Tucker is a member of the N.C. Utilities Commission and a former member of the state elections board.
Former Senator Bob Rucho, Berger’s lead redistricting deputy in 2011, also served on the state board of elections.
