Homs, Security forces move to contain fallout from sectarian-motivated crime

Tension is prevailing in Homs province in central Syria after a man and his wife were killed and sectarian slogans were written in their blood, amid intervention by army units and the Internal Security Forces.

The bodies of the man and his wife were found inside their home, with sectarian slogans written in the victims’ blood, in the town of Zaidal (south of Homs in central Syria), on the morning of Sunday, 23 November.

The head of the Internal Security Forces in Homs province, Murhaf al-Naasan, said that the town had witnessed a murder in which a man and his wife were killed inside their home and the wife’s body was burned. Phrases of a sectarian nature were also found at the crime scene, indicating an attempt to sow discord among residents.

The competent authorities, upon receiving the report, immediately began all necessary legal procedures, including cordoning off the scene, collecting evidence, and opening an extensive investigation to clarify the circumstances of the crime and identify and pursue the perpetrators in order to bring them before the competent judiciary.

All measures have been taken to ensure the protection of civilians and the stability of the area, according to a statement published by the Syrian Ministry of Interior on its Facebook page.

Al-Naasan condemned what he described as a heinous crime, considering that its goal is to ignite sectarian discourse and plant discord among members of society.

He called on residents to exercise self restraint, avoid any reactions, and leave investigations to the Internal Security Forces, which he said are carrying out their duties responsibly and impartially in order to apprehend the perpetrators and impose security.

    Repercussions of the incident

An activist from Homs city, who asked not to be named for security reasons, told Enab Baladi that the murdered husband was from the Bani Khalid tribe, which belongs to the al-Nasir clan. This led members of Bedouin tribes to attack the al-Muhajireen, al-Mudabi’a, and al-Arman neighborhoods in Homs city.

The attack caused material damage, including cars being burned and smashed, looting, setting fires in the streets, and assaults on civilians, as part of retaliatory acts over the killing of the couple, according to the activist.

He confirmed that there were injuries as a result of the attacks on residential neighborhoods, with transportation largely cut off in these areas, while the Internal Security Forces intervened to contain the situation and imposed a curfew in the neighborhoods that were attacked.

    Security response

In its statement, the Ministry of Interior said that Zaidal and several areas south of Homs city are witnessing increased security measures, as the Internal Security Forces have raised their readiness level and started intensive deployments in and around these areas, to ensure security, protect stability, and prevent any exploitation of the incident to stir sectarian strife.

The state-run channel al-Ikhbariya reported that the Internal Security Forces in Homs imposed a curfew in the city from 5 p.m. until 5 a.m.

The town of Zaidal lies on the southeastern outskirts of Homs and is home to both Christian residents and Sunni Muslims.

A series of incidents in Homs

Neighborhoods and towns in Homs countryside have been witnessing successive killings amid the absence of an effective security role, according to residents.

The latest of these incidents was the killing by stoning of two young men, Wissam Daher al-Ali, 23, and Mohammed Saleh al-Ali, 24, in the village of Abu Hakfa (in the eastern countryside of Homs province), on 21 November.

Before that, a female teacher was killed when she was targeted with a hand grenade outside her home, leading to her immediate death, in the al-Walid neighborhood in Homs countryside.
