Ukraine has hit back at Russia overnight, destroying key oil refineries and sinking a Russian shadow fleet tanker.

Scott Lucas, professor of US and International Politics at University College Dublin, said this shows Ukraine is “moving from resistance to a show of strength against the Russians”.

“Do I think this will knock Russia out of the war?” he told The i Paper. “No, but I think what it does is it puts the question gradually to the Kremlin: do you want to keep on trying to seize more Ukrainian territory, or do you ceasefire on the basis of the current front lines?”

Oil refineries in Bashkortostan region hit

Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky said drones struck three oil refineries in the republic of Bashkortostan, which is 1,600 kilometres from the border.

The refineries “process millions of tons of oil each year”, he said on social media. Russian online news outlet Astra reported today that a Ukrainian drone sparked a fire at an oil refinery in Ufa, the capital of Bashkortostan.

Local officials said debris from a drone that was shot down caused “smoke” at an unspecified industrial site.

Ukraine’s near daily long-range drone and missile strikes using domestically developed weapons have battered Russian oil facilities for months. The operation has brought on a fuel crisis in Russia.

Professor Lucas said: “Ukraine survived the winter against the Russians attacks against their energy infrastructure and they stepped up their own attacks on refineries, but also on the ports and the terminals where they try to export the oil from.

“That, at one point in combination with other factors, reduced Russia’s oil exports by 50 per cent.

“It led to a shortage of petrol and diesel, and so Russia is at the point now where they’ve had rationing in more than 50 regions.”

Zelensky also said the sanctioned Russian container ship called the Yanina sank in the Black Sea after being struck by Ukrainian drones, describing it as one of the “facilities that sustain the war effort”.

Russia’s state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, said its shipping subsidiary FESCO operated the vessel and said it was transporting “civilian goods” including construction materials and frozen food.

Ukraine has hit more than 200 vessels in Russia’s shadow fleet in July.

‘Russia’s Amazon’ warehouses destroyed

Last week, Ukraine found a new pressure point in its fight against Vladamir Putin’s war as it attacked five warehouses of the e-commerce company Wildberries, which has been described as “Russia’s Amazon”.

At least nine people have been killed in the drone strikes, which left plumes of black smoke billowing over parts of Russia.

Wildberries is one of Russia’s biggest companies, with a reported turnover of 6.1tn rubles (£58bn) last year with roughly 48,000 employees.

The strikes have reportedly destroyed millions of pounds worth of stock – including from small businesses that sell on the site – and destroyed around 8 per cent of the firm’s storage sites.

Zelensky said the strikes targeted logistics hubs handling dual-use electronics and drone components, and came in response to Russian attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.

The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has again pressed the US and Western allies for more anti-ballistic missile defence system so it can better protect itself against Russia.

Writing on X, he said: “Every package of ballistic missile interceptors saves the lives of our people. And every night without them results in more casualties.”
