Syrian army and SDF reach truce in Raqqa

The Syrian army and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have reached a truce providing for a complete ceasefire and an end to mutual targeting in the eastern countryside of Raqqa, following clashes between the two sides that lasted for about a week.

Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Raqqa reported that the two sides agreed to a truce starting on the evening of Friday, 21 November, after a week of clashes that involved all types of weapons.

However, on Saturday, 22 November, at around 2:30 p.m., the eastern countryside witnessed an exchange of fire between the two sides that lasted for about 15 minutes, triggered by what the correspondent described as a provocation initiated by the SDF, after which the shooting stopped and the situation has remained calm so far.

As of the time this report was published, neither side had issued an official statement about the agreed truce.

On Friday evening, the SDF had published a statement saying that calm had returned to the Ghanem al-Ali front east of Raqqa (in northern Syria) after artillery shelling carried out by “factions affiliated with the Damascus government” on the area, which it said caused no human or material losses.

    Two soldiers killed

The media and communications directorate at the Syrian Ministry of Defense said that two army soldiers were killed and others wounded in what it described as a “treacherous attack” launched by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) at midnight on 20 November, targeting army positions in Maadan east of Raqqa (in northern Syria), following what it called “intense” preparatory fire with various types of weapons.

According to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the SDF seized several positions during the attack, before the army launched a “direct” counterattack and managed to recapture the positions it had lost and expel the attacking forces.

The Ministry of Defense held the SDF responsible for what it described as “a renewed, almost daily assault” targeting army positions in the area.

For its part, the SDF presented a completely different account, saying that its operations east of Raqqa targeted locations it said the Islamic State group had used to launch drones toward its positions in the Badiya of Ghanem al-Ali.

A statement by the SDF media center explained that the area had witnessed, during the current week, a series of attacks carried out by factions it described as “affiliated with the Damascus government”, coinciding with the activity of Islamic State cells, adding that the sites targeted by its forces had “actually” been used by the group as bases to launch drones.

The SDF added that it had published video recordings that, according to the statement, confirm direct coordination between government forces and Islamic State elements in targeting its military positions.

In another statement published by the SDF, it said that its forces had shot down two drones on 19 November in the vicinity of the village of Ghanem al-Ali east of Raqqa, which it said originated from Syrian government positions.

The Syrian Ministry of Defense has not issued any statement about these clashes.

    What about Deir Ezzor?

The Internal Security Forces in North and East Syria (Asayish), which operate under the Autonomous Administration, said that its forces had come under two simultaneous attacks on the evening of Friday, 21 November, in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor (in eastern Syria), carried out by what it described as “terrorist cells” that continually seek to undermine security and stability and spread chaos.

In a statement published late Friday evening, it said that two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on a joint checkpoint of its forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the town of Abrieh (in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside), then fled the scene, while at the same time unknown assailants threw a hand grenade at one of its centers in Dhiban (in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside), without any injuries among its personnel.

Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Deir Ezzor reported that two attacks had targeted positions affiliated with the Autonomous Administration, the first in the town of Abrieh that targeted “Komandos” forces, wounding one member, and the second targeting the municipality post, which left several Asayish members injured.

The Asayish stated that its forces responded immediately to the sources of fire at both sites, after which the attackers withdrew, and patrols were promptly deployed in the area and security presence reinforced, alongside the launch of follow up procedures to identify the perpetrators and track “the parties behind them”, as it put it.

    Previous attack

A checkpoint of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the town of Abu Hammam (in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside) came under an armed attack on 2 November, which involved clashes between SDF fighters and the attackers.

Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Deir Ezzor said that gunmen targeted the al-Sanour checkpoint in Abu Hammam, in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, and that clashes broke out between SDF fighters and the attackers in which rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) were used.

In a statement published on 2 November, the SDF said its fighters had foiled a “terrorist” attack targeting one of its checkpoints in the town, noting that its personnel had repelled the attack and responded “immediately”, with no casualties in its ranks.

It added that the attackers “fled under the strikes of its fighters”, and that its forces had combed the area after the attack and restored “security and stability” to it, stressing that it would continue its security operations in the area “to counter any threat to civilians”.
