ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The funeral for Sister Grace Miller, who died Thursday at 90 years old, will be held a week from this Saturday at the Sisters of Mercy Mother House.
Sister Grace was once compared to Mother Teresa. The comparison happened at a special Mass for Mother Teresa at St. Peter’s Basilica after her death.
“A few weeks ago I visited the House of Mercy in the Diocese of Rochester,” said Father Tom Rosica as he made the comparison. “I was brought to tears when I saw what Sister Grace Miller, a Sister of Mercy in her 80s, is doing with the destitute poor in the poorest neighborhood in the city.”
In an interview with Sister Grace 10 years ago in the kitchen where she fed hungry people, Brean brought up the comparison.
Berkeley Brean, News10NBC: “He compared you to Mother Teresa.”Sister Grace Miller, House of Mercy: “I’m floored. I’m absolutely floored.”
Brean spoke with two of Sister Grace’s Sisters of Mercy today.
Berkeley Brean: “Was she our Mother Teresa?”Sister Mary Ann Ayers, Sisters of Mercy: “I believe that the people that she served in the broader community felt that she had the gifts of Mother Teresa.”
Berkeley Brean: “They served the same people really.”Sister Mary Ann Ayers: “Yes she did. She served the homeless, the needy, the poorest, the forgotten.”
Sister Grace started the House of Mercy 40 years ago. It’s open year-round but so important in the brutal winter. A new home opened in 2017. She helped people who were poor and agitated people in power. Three years ago, people protested when she was removed from leadership.
Berkeley Brean: “You grew up together?”Sister Livia Ann Ruocco, Sisters of Mercy: “We grew up together. She was three years older than I was.”
Sister Livia Ann Ruocco was Sister Grace’s cousin in Corning.
Sister Livia Ann Ruocco: “Her legacy is and her last words before she couldn’t speak said ‘please take care of my people.'”
Sister Grace’s cousin shared a story about her humanity. Sister Grace was in jail, arrested after a protest and met a young woman who asked for some of her food. Sister Grace gave it to her. She asked for Sister Grace’s brand new jacket and she gave it to her. And then years later, Sister Grace met that woman on the street in Rochester wearing the same jacket. A silent act of mercy by Sister Grace Miller.
The funeral for Sister Grace Miller will be held on Saturday, November 29 at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of Mercy Center on Blossom Road in Brighton. The funeral will be live streamed on WHEC.com.
