The Charlotte Hornets and LaMelo Ball could be headed for a split.
According to Yahoo Sports’ Kelly Iko, the superstar point guard is growing increasingly frustrated with the state of the organization. The team has started the year 4-11 and has not appeared in a postseason series since the 2015-16 season. They have also only appeared in the NBA’s Play-In Tournament once since its inception in 2020.
“Following the Hornets’ disappointing road loss to the 2-13 Indiana Pacers — their fourth straight, dropping Charlotte to 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 4-11 record — star guard LaMelo Ball has grown increasingly frustrated with the organization and is open to a trade away from the franchise, multiple league sources told Yahoo Sports.”
Ball is averaging 21.6 points, 9.6 assists, and 6.9 rebounds in his nine games played. The guard has also seen his efficiency plummet, as he’s shooting a mere 38.5 percent from the field and 29.8 percent from long range. Both are career-worst marks.
Does LaMelo Ball Want a Trade from the Hornets?
LaMelo Ball joins Anthony Davis as one of the biggest names in the early-season trade chatter. Unlike Davis, however, Ball is still only 24 years old. He has long been praised for his elite passing instincts and well-rounded scoring ability. The thought of some team talking themselves into fixing the uber-talented guard isn’t hard to muster. But it would undoubtedly come with risk.
As tantalizing as Ball’s skill set is, the guard has struggled immensely to stay on the floor. He has only played more than 51 games once during his six-year-long career, and this came during his second season with the franchise. Over the last three years, he has suited up for 36 games, 22 games, and 47 games, respectively.
Ball’s care-free play style can also be both a gift and a curse. He can struggle at times with turnovers and consistency, and he’s only a 42.0 percent shooter from the field over his career. Still, many would likely claim that Ball continues to possess all the skills necessary to be a high-impact superstar, which could certainly lead to plenty of trade buzz as the season goes on.
At the end of the day, though, this will all come down to whether or not the Hornets want to make a move. They do have several other intriguing youngsters to build around, including 2023 No. 2 overall pick Brandon Miller. But Ball has been the face of the franchise since he came to the team in 2020, and he remains one of the league’s most recognizable faces. We also can’t forget that he’s only in the second year of a five-year, $203,852,600 million deal. A massive contract like that is never easy to move, especially in today’s latest CBA era.
