Salida del Sol Academy’s mariachi performed in front of its largest crowd to date this month, opening for actor and comedian George Lopez at the Union Colony Civic Center in Greeley.
Before Lopez took the stage on Nov. 14, the school’s mariachi performed for about an hour, including a rendition of “Low Rider,” the opening theme song for the “George Lopez” sitcom. A video of the mariachi performing the song has amassed nearly 50,000 views on TikTok.
“That song was really fun because everybody started cheering … as soon as it was played,” said Iker Cruz, an eighth grade student who plays violin in the school’s mariachi.
“When we first walked out, we were … really, really nervous,” Cruz said. “But when we got on that stage … it was really fun and it was fun to see how everybody was … enjoying the show, recording and listening to us.”

“He was really nice,” Cruz said of Lopez.
Lopez is currently on tour and has several performances scheduled across the United States.
Erika VanDriel, who teaches music at Salida del Sol Academy, said Lopez’s tour representatives reached out about a month ago looking for a local school’s mariachi to open the Greeley show. She was onboard immediately.
“I’ve never had the opportunity to perform in that sort of capacity with my students. It was definitely a moment that I’ll never forget as a teacher,” VanDriel said. “I hope that my students won’t forget it either because that was truly once in a lifetime for us and for our school.”
Salida del Sol Academy is a charter school with a multicultural, dual-language immersion program in Greeley-Evans School District 6.
