Weld County Commissioner Scott James will run for his third and final term as a county commissioner for District 2 in the 2026 election.
In an announcement Monday, James said he will continue to champion conservative leadership focused on public safety, infrastructure and fiscal responsibility.
“I’m running for a third and final term to protect Weld County’s way of life, keep our finances strong, and make sure county government stays limited, efficient and accountable,” James said. “That’s what it means to be right for Weld.”
District 2 encompasses the I-25 corridor and includes communities including Evans, southwest Greeley and Johnstown. In Johnstown, James served as the chairman of the planning and zoning commission, a member of the town council and the mayor.
James has also helped launch the GoNoCo34 Transit Management Organization to ensure transportation and infrastructure keep pace with growth. As an advocate for energy production, he seeks to encourage further development of energy industries, especially nuclear energy.
“As Weld County grows, we have to manage that growth responsibly,” James said in his announcement. “We must protect our agricultural heritage and our energy economy, support families and small businesses, and keep government in its proper lane.”
James emphasized this campaign will be his last run for county commissioner.
“If the voters hire me for a third term, I’ll do exactly what I have done the first two terms and give it everything I’ve got — and then it will be time for new leadership to step up,” James said in his announcement. “My goal is to hand off a county government that is strong, stable, and firmly on the right path for Weld County’s future.”
James is the only candidate who has filed to run for the District 2 seat so far. Primaries are set for June 30 next year, with Election Day on Nov. 3.
