Next September, the world’s top open water teenagers will convene in Santa Fe de la Cruz, Argentina, to partake in the Junior Open Water World Championships.
Located in the northeast part of the Southern Cone country, Santa Fe is no stranger to hosting open water events. In the 2010s, it was a staple stop of the now-discontinued World Aquatics (then FINA) Ultramarathon Swim Series. Santa Fe, the capital city to the province of the same namesake, is the 8th largest Argentine city with a metro population of 650,000.
“We are very excited to be bringing next year’s World Aquatics Junior Open Water Swimming Championships to our historic city,” Argentina Aquatics Confederation president Sergio Atonini told World Aquatics. “We have a passionate fan base and strong local support for open water swimming, so we couldn’t be prouder to bring the world back to Santa Fe next September.”
From September 3-6, nine events will take place at the freshwater lake Lago Sur. Events include the 14-15 5k, 16-17 7.5, 18-19 10k, and 3k sprint knockout for each gender, culminating with a mixed 4×1500 relay contest.
Importantly, the event coincides with none of the major four pool championships of the 2026 calendar: Asian Games, European Championships, Pan Pacific Championships, or Commonwealth Games. On the junior level, the Argentine event also curbs conflicts with the European Junior Championships. It does begin about two weeks after the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Vancouver.
The highest ranked 18-and-unders from 2025 are Turkey’s Emir Batur Albayak on the boy’s side and American Brinkleigh Hansen on the girl’s front. Both Albayak and Hansen were gold medalists at the 2024 edition of the meet in Alghero, Italy, alongside names such as Claire Weinstein. The United States topped the medal table in Alghero, followed by France, then Hungary and Germany.
This event precedes the multi-sport South American Games, also held in Santa Fe, a week later.
