ALBANY, N.Y. — In April of last year, New York State Police established an organized retail theft task force following a 68% spike in retail theft during the pandemic. Since then, Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office said troopers have recovered more than $2.6 million in stolen goods.
Retail theft has decreased by 13%, officials said. Gov. Hochul hopes this decline will encourage New Yorkers to shop in person and support local businesses.
“We never say mission accomplished. We’re here to continue the work, but I want to put a spotlight on the fact that as we enter this holiday season, we want people to come out, feel comfortable walking into places like this or their storefronts, or going anywhere they want,” Hochul said. “We encourage people to shop in person as much as you can because there are real people, real stories to be told, real families where someone has a dream and you want to make sure that they’re successful.”
The task force has made more than 1,200 arrests and filed over 2,100 charges, officials said.
