It’s been years since Pink Floyd released any music, but that’s officially changed — and longtime fans have a big reason to celebrate. The legendary band has unveiled something they’ve never done before.
The rock group has created a complete, uninterrupted version of all nine movements of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” seamlessly stitched together into one 25-minute track. For many listeners, it’s a chance to experience a classic in the way it was always meant to feel.
Originally released in 1975, “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” was written as a tribute to Pink Floyd’s original frontman, Syd Barrett.
In a rare archival clip included with the expanded reissue, Roger Waters reflects on that inspiration, saying, “It's my homage to Syd. My heartfelt expression of my sadness, but also my admiration for his talent. And my sadness for the loss of a friend."
As a co-founder of Pink Floyd, Barrett helped define the band’s distinctive sound, especially on their 1967 debut The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. His battles with mental health and addiction, however, led him to step away after 1968’s Saucerful of Secrets.
Although he recorded only two solo albums before leaving the band, his artistic legacy lived on. He even stopped by the studio unannounced during the “Wish You Were Here” sessions. His bandmates later said the visit felt almost unreal, since they hardly recognized him.
Even so, his early work continued to inspire the group, and drummer Nick Mason later formed his own project celebrating Barrett’s era, also dubbed Saucerful of Secrets.
The newly expanded digital release of Wish You Were Here 50 arrives December 12 via Sony Music. It features a new Dolby Atmos mix of the original album, nine studio outtakes and 16 live recordings from the April 26, 1975 show at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.
The Blu-ray edition brings together three concert films from the 1975 tour and a short film by iconic Floyd cover artist Storm Thorgerson. And for anyone who loves collecting albums, the 3LP and 2CD versions include the original record plus nine extra studio tracks.
For fans who enjoy diving deep, the deluxe box set goes all out. It features everything from the 2CD, 3LP and Blu-ray editions, plus a clear vinyl of Live at Wembley 1974, a replica Japanese 7" single, a hardcover book, a comic book tour program and a Knebworth concert poster.
To coincide with the release of the newly compiled track, actor and artist Noel Fielding created a series of paintings inspired by Barrett.
“I was pretty young when my affinity with Pink Floyd and Syd started. I remember going to the library and hiring the tape of ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn’ when I was 12. And I just was like, ‘What’s this?’ It blew my mind. I couldn’t believe it,” he reflected.
Fielding also shared why Barrett’s work still resonates with him decades later. “It could be the 70s, but it could be 2040. It’s the future and the past at the same time. It is a masterpiece, that album cover, and that album. It’s a masterpiece. And it’s based on Syd Barrett, who is a walking masterpiece.”
