File this under strange coincidences.
Jason Narducy is an acclaimed indie rock music who plays with Bob Mould’s band and tours with actor Michael Shannon and a band of other musicians playing the music of R.E.M.
Narducy is currently on a solo tour, where he’s performing at the homes of fans. When he played a living room show in Milwaukee on Nov. 15, he stumbled upon a weird coincidence that was so strange, he was compelled to share a detailed account of the episode on Instagram along with a carousel of photos—one of him performing for the seated crowd at the house concert, another of the home owner Tom beaming as he listens on the phone, a third of an upstairs bedroom with a tapered roof and ceiling fan, and finally one of a bespectacled young Bill Berry, best-known as the drummer in R.E.M., pre-unibrow, wearing a white turtleneck.

“I played a living room show in Milwaukee Saturday night at a home I’d never been to, owned by a couple I’d never met. We were connected by my friend Ken Sumka. Their names are Tom and Sue. They were very friendly and they told me before the show they have been told for years that Bill Berry lived in this house when he was a child,” he wrote.
“I asked if they had verification. They did not but there were a number of people in the neighborhood who believed it was true. I played the show (super fun - great crowd) and went to bed in an upstairs bedroom wondering if it was Bill Berry’s bedroom.”
Through his R.E.M. tribute project with Shannon, Narducy had become friendly with R.E.M. manager Bertis Downs, who is a big supporter of their project. Since Narducy didn’t have Berry’s contact information, he sent a picture of the living room and the home address to Downs, hoping to confirm or debunk the story.
“In the morning, Bertis texted me ‘Bill says that *is* his childhood home and he wants you to have his number.’ I went downstairs and told Tom and Sue about the confirmation. I also said “I am now going to send my first text to Bill Berry. Maybe he would want a couple more photos of the house,” Narducy wrote.

Bill would ask his brother to play the record as often as possible and he would play the piano with his left hand trying to play the McCartney bass parts,” Narducy wrote.
Then Berry asked to speak to the owners of the home. He had a 20-minute conversation with Tom in which they discussed the neighborhood, a nearby park and more. Tom also told Bill about his 22-year-old son, Will, who plays drums in a Beatles tribute band.
When Narducy got back on the phone, Berry said to him, “I’m all tingly.” Narducy said Berry “sounded very happy. He asked if I would please give his number to Tom so they could stay in touch,” he added.
Yet there’s a capper to the strange story. “Before we said goodbye, I asked Bill which bedroom was his,” Narducy wrote. “He described the upstairs perfectly and I was, indeed, sleeping in his room.”
