John Fogerty Performs 'Green River' on Stephen Colbert's 'The Late Show'

While stopping by Colbert's late-night program on Monday, Nov. 17, Fogerty topped off the visit with a performance of the beloved CCR track "Green River."

The band first released "Green River" in July 1969 as a single off their album of the same name. Over 50 years later, Fogerty proved he can still rock just the same.

"80 years young and still performing the song in the original key. Amazing!" one fan gushed in the comments under the YouTube video of the performance.

Another person echoed, "Eighty years old, AND THE GUY STILL NAILS IT EXACTLY LIKE HE DID WHEN HE WROTE IT! UN FREAKING BELIEVABLE."

"80 years old and still slays," someone else added while calling Fogerty an "Absolute legend."

"An american icon that still loves the music," another comment read.

One person wrote, "It’s crazy how good he still is, all these decades later!"

Someone else added, "Sounds even better than the original studio version. Fogerty is still badass at 80."

"The Legendary John Fogerty is timeless and ageless!!!" one commenter gushed, while another user said they "can't tell" Fogerty is 80.

"A living legend and incredible songwriter," someone else added, while others said the music icon sounds "strong as ever" and "can still shred."

John Fogerty Opens Up About Regaining the Rights to His Music

During his interview with Colbert, Fogerty looked back on the journey to regaining the rights to his own music, which he relinquished to his former record label, Fantasy Records, in order to get out of his contract back in 1980.

In 2023, after decades of trying to get his songs back, the "Fortunate Sun" artist finally acquired a majority stake in the CCR catalogue from Concord Records, which had taken ownership of the publishing rights after buying Fantasy Records.

Speaking with Colbert on Monday's show, Fogerty beamed with a newfound confidence since getting his songs back.

"You might be surprised to know, my self-esteem really changed," he confessed to Colbert, noting that he "kind of got snookered" out of the ownership of his catalog back in 1980.

"I won't go into that long, sad story, but for years and years, I just felt kind of like a sap, a sucker," he said, describing himself as "the guy who had given away the farm, you might say."

Fogerty added that he often would feel like a "fool" when fans complimented him on the music he no longer owned, so when he finally regained the rights, it was "an instant esteem booster."

During the conversation, Colbert also rattled off a long list of hit songs released by CCR in just a span of a couple years, including "Proud Mary," "Bad Moon Rising," "Down on the Corner," "Fortunate Son," "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" and many, many more.
