Hey, At Least Coby White Looked Awesome in His Debut

If the Chicago Bulls’ fifth straight loss was the vomit and pounding headache, Coby White’s 27-point debut was the mouthwash and Advil.

After starting the season 6-1, the Bulls now head into Monday night’s meeting with the Denver Nuggets at 6-6. Their double-OT loss to the rebuilding Utah Jazz was about as gut-wrenching as an early-season defeat can be. They started the season punching teams in the mouth with a play style that showed how the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts. Teams couldn’t keep up with their unselfish ball movement and uptempo attack. It felt sustainable … until it didn’t.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, Donovan Mitchell, and Victor Wembanyama painfully reminded the Bulls of how much star power matters. Then, the heavily beat-up Pistons and ragtag Jazz reminded the Bulls of their greatest offseason concern – defense. Chicago is now right back in the place where many thought they would be (9th in the Eastern Conference), and there may only be one man who can save them.

Coby White Looked Good as New in Season Debut for Bulls

While Coby White may not have walked off the court with a win on Sunday night, he undoubtedly served as the silver lining. Less than 2 seconds after stepping on the court in a reserve role, White looked like his former self. Ayo Dosunmu was inbounding the ball underneath the basket and found his teammate coming off a screen headed in his direction. In one fluid motion, White snagged the ball, left his feet, and drained the easy triple.

Immediately on the Pistons’ next possession, White threw his body in front of a driving Isaiah Collier. While he may not have earned the charge call, the hard foul alone set the tone for both him and his teammates. The Bulls started the game slowly but tied things up by the end of the first quarter.

White would go on to score 12 points with 3 assists and 2 rebounds in the first half. Both his field goal makes came behind the three-point line, whereas the rest of his points came at the charity stripe. His +8 showing in the first half helped steer Chicago to a 70-61 halftime lead. And he was just getting started.

After a quiet third quarter, White re-entered the game with 6:39 left to go and the score knotted up at 111. He would go on to score or assist on 9 of the team’s next 12 points, and this included a huge three to give Chicago a 123-120 lead with 2:26 to go. White came up clutch yet again with the Bulls back down one with 37 seconds left. Capturing the defense’s full attention, he drove to the rim before quickly dumping the ball off to Josh Giddey, who drained the floater for the lead.

Lauri Markkanen would tie the game at the free-throw line and force the first OT. Coming into the night on a minutes restriction, it wasn’t clear if White would return. But there he was, checking back in 3 minutes into OT and ready to come up huge again. With the game on the line, he forced a jump ball, won the jump ball, and nailed the blow-by layup as time essentially expired to send things to double-OT.

Even if the Bulls didn’t walk away from the final 5 minutes with the win, White continued to look instantly ready to step into the crunch time role this team has desperately needed. He scored or assisted on 8 of the team’s final 10 points.

Sure, he may have only shot 5-14 from the field, but he finished the night a perfect 14-14 from the free-throw line. Think about how crazy that is. In his first game back from a pretty serious calf strain, White bulldozed his way for a career-best performance at the free-throw line. He initiated and invited all kinds of contact around the rim, all while sprinting in transition and diving on the ground for loose balls. As far as I’m concerned, that speaks volumes about who White is and has become as a player.

I know it sounds strange to say after a loss, but you could see the immediate difference he made for this group. When big plays were needed, he made them. And, equally as importantly, his teammates let him. You could sense the immense trust that both the players and Billy Donovan had in White.

There is a lot of basketball left to play this season, which could be both good and bad news for the Chicago Bulls. But let’s not lose sight of what continues to be the most important thing about this season.

The Bulls didn’t come in with a strict focus on the win-loss column. Instead, they are trying to figure out what works and who belongs. White has been a key piece for a long time, but the franchise has a decision to make about his future with unrestricted free agency looming in 2026. Every single game he plays will be taken into account as both the Bulls determine if he’s worth the payday. Again, Sunday night may not have ended with the win, but the performance showed that White could be ready to put some real pressure on the franchise.
