An early-morning burglary of a staple sub shop in Chicago led to a scary confrontation between the owner’s husband and three armed men Saturday.
Around 5:21 a.m. Saturday, the owner of Tony’s Italian Deli & Subs went into the business, located at 6707 North Northwest Highway in Edison Park, to open up for the day and caught three armed burglars in the act.
The burglars then threatened him at gunpoint, his co-owner told NBC Chicago.
The trio of thieves broke in through the door and went for the registers, surveillance video showed. They smashed windows and the door in the process.
They then drove away with the stolen goods, police said.
Tony’s Italian Deli & subs has served Edison Park on Chicago’s Northwest Side for 45 years.
Following Saturday’s burglary, however, it was the community that came through for the deli.
The owner posted on Facebook about the burglary, adding that the business would be open for the day, and long lines of customers came by to support the business.
“Please be patient as we are trying our best to continue to be resilient,” the caption of the post said.
Police are searching for a dark colored sedan.
