Case Keenum has put up zero stats this season, but there is an argument to be made that he is one of the most valuable pieces to the puzzle that is the 2025 Chicago Bears.
Don’t get me wrong. Head Coach Ben Johnson and quarterback Caleb Williams are the two most important people at Halas Hall. Not to overstate things, but the Bears will go only as far as the coach-quarterback tandem will take them. There are other key cogs in the machine, too. Other players on offense, defense, and special teams play will play important roles for the Bears.
And let’s not forget about Case Keenum. The Bears’ backup quarterback is playing an invaluable role in the development of Caleb Williams, with Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson explaining to The Athletic’s Dan Pompei why the team brought Keenum to Chicago in the first place:
Some will tell you the idea of the veteran QB mentor is a myth, that graybeards are natural predators of greenhorns, and that as they age, most players are on Team Me. Case Keenum is here to blow your mind. My story for @theathletic. pic.twitter.com/uHjGYSK2F2

I strongly encourage you to allow for some time to check out this must-read piece from The Athletic’s Dan Pompei, who lays out why Case Keenum is precisely what the Bears needed for their quarterback room.
As the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart, Case Keenum serves as the emergency quarterback on game days. In this position, he can play the role of hype man or sounding board while on the sidelines at a moment’s notice. It is a thankless job. And while that doesn’t necessarily fully capture everything Keenum does for the Bears, it is worth pointing out that the 37-year-old quarterback is thriving in this role in right now. It is pretty neat to see a veteran holding on at the end of his NFL career and making the most of it by passing on his wealth of knowledge to others.
AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE BEARS’ WEEK 10 WIN FEATURES A HEALTHY DOSE OF CASE KEENUM
For what it’s worth, this is what I figured the Bears were hoping Case Keenum would bring to the table. Keenum providing veteran leadership and a presence quality teammate for two young signal callers in the quarterbacks room is something that we shouldn’t take for granted. And after seeing what the quarterbacks room looked like without that type of person in the locker room, seeing what Keenum does now puts into perspective how badly the previous coaching regime missed on not having a veteran backup quarterback to help steward Caleb Williams (and even Tyson Bagent) along for the journey that was the 2024 season.
There are a lot of fun anecdotes in the Pompei piece. Hence, I hope you find time to read it from top to bottom. But before you leave this post, I wanted to share my favorite nugget:
Johnson didn’t know Case Keenum. Neither did any of his assistants. Bill Lazor did, however, and he had worked with Johnson on the Miami Dolphins. Lazor had been with Keenum as the Houston Texans’ senior offensive assistant since 2023 and told Johnson that Keenum’s work with C.J. Stroud was a significant factor in Stroud winning offensive rookie of the year.
Of all people to help the Bears develop their young quarterback in 2025, I was not expecting Bill Lazor to be name-dropped as a helpful hand. But as it turns out, Lazor (the Bears’ offensive coordinator in 2020 and 2021) reached out to Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson to relay how valuable Case Keenum was to C.J. Stroud’s rookie season in 2023. Sometimes, it is as much about who you know as it is what you know. And sometimes, who you know and what you know can help someone else. So if the Caleb Williams experience works out the way we’re hoping, someone might need to send a thank you card to former Bears OC Bill Lazor.
