A police department in Racine County, Wisconsin, will permanently close on Sunday, and law enforcement duties will be transferred to the local sheriff’s department.
The Village of Sturtevant Police Department said in a Facebook post that the department will officially close at 6:15 a.m. and end law enforcement services to the community of roughly 7,000 residents. The Racine County Sheriff’s Office will begin handling calls within the service area.
“We want to extend our deepest gratitude to all of you for your years of support, partnership, and trust,” village police said. “Your engagement and commitment to keeping our village safe have made a lasting difference.”
WTMJ, the NBC affiliate in Milwaukee, reported the Sturtevant village board started exploring shutting down the police department and outsourcing law enforcement services in August, but it remained unclear what prompted the decision. Multiple residents said they were caught by surprise – and shared frustration about learning of the potential change through social media rather than official channels.
Brent McCoy, president of the Sturtevant Professional Police Association, told WTMJ at the time the department felt blindsided.
“”The communication hasn’t been there between the village side and us. We have had no talks with any of the trustees. No communication as far as their plans with this. And we’re looking to get that communication,” McCoy said.
