TEMPE — Arizona State has been known to implement trickery in its special teams, and kicker Jesus Gomez got in on the fun against West Virginia on Saturday.
Gomez took a direct snap on an extra point and tossed it to tight end Cameron Harpole for the two-point conversion. It came right after Derek Eusebio ran in a 19-yard catch for a touchdown.

It was the first pass attempt of Gomez’s five-year college career and it worked to perfection.
ASU was feeling a bit greedy for points as its offense came alive in the second quarter. Its first scoring drive featured three pickups of more than 20 yards, and its second benefitted from a short field that Eusebio was able to capitalize on.

The explosive quarter — which also included a 33-yard touchdown reception from Raleek Brown — came after the Sun Devils went three-and-out on both first-quarter possessions, netting 17 total yards.
Arizona State’s history of tricky special teams
While special teams hasn’t usually done what it’s supposed to this season for the Sun Devils, it’s got a reputation for coming up big in unusual ways.
Think back to the fake punt ASU ran in the Peach Bowl where Kanyon Floyd threw downfield to defensive lineman Blazen Lono-Wong. Defensive end Clayton Smith caught one in the Kansas game earlier last season.
