Nazar TBD, Centennial Celebration, Limping Leafs, Prospect Highlights, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks host the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight in a fabulous Original Six matchup. The Hawks will be celebrating the end of the first “chapter” of their Centennial series with some pretty cool opportunities for fans before the game.

The doors to the Atrium will open at 3:30 so fans can see some artifacts from the older days in Blackhawks history, including a display of Bobby Hull’s and Stan Mikita’s curved sticks, Mikita’s personal trophies and Tony Esposito’s game-worn gear. There will also be an alumni Q&A in the Atrium at 4:45 that Darren Pang will anchor (with an appearance from Denis Savard). And then there will be an on-ice ceremony emceed by Pat Foley at 5:30 before the early 6 PM puck drop.

We’re going to have to wait to see if Frank Nazar is good to go against the Maple Leafs tonight. He’s a game-time decision (before the morning skate), as are Jason Dickinson and Tyler Bertuzzi. Harman Dayal at The Athletic wrote about five sophomores who are impressing in the NHL this season, and Nazar was front and center. Here’s part of what Dayal wrote about Nazar:

Nazar is a deadly rush attacker. He puts defenders on their heels with his blazing-fast speed, ranking in the 86th percentile of NHL players for speed bursts greater than 20 miles per hour. He also has a quick, heavy release on his shot that can fool goaltenders.

When his line is attacking off the cycle, Nazar shows an underrated IQ for getting open as a shooter in high-danger areas. …

Nazar has already generated 16 shots on goal from “high-danger” areas according to NHL Edge, which ranks in the 87th percentile of forwards. The Blackhawks have leaned on him in a huge role: centering the second line, playing on the top power-play unit and averaging more than two minutes per game on the penalty kill.

    — The Athletic NHL (@TheAthleticNHL) November 14, 2025 Here’s Toronto head coach Craig Berube speaking after the Leafs lost in overtime to the Kings on Thursday. The Leafs are in seventh place in the Atlantic Division, they’re 5-4-1 in their last 10 and fly into Chicago looking to improve their 1-4-0 road record to date.

    — Toronto Maple Leafs (@MapleLeafs) November 14, 2025 Lots of moving pieces for Toronto right now with injuries piling up and limited cap space. Joseph Woll and Easton Cowan are back. As I noted previously, Auston Matthews will not play in Chicago this season.

Maple Leafs G Artur Akhtyamov has been assigned to the Toronto Marlies. F Auston Matthews has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to November 11, 2025.F Easton Cowan has been recalled from the Toronto Marlies (AHL). G Joseph Woll has been activated to the roster.

    — Leafs PR (@LeafsPR) November 14, 2025 Interestingly, Ben Pope wrote about the Blackhawks’ free agency situation already with a focus on two specific forwards: Dickinson and Ilya Mikheyev. We’ve talked plenty here about the Blackhawks needing to spend money in the coming years before they start having more extensions for young players kick in, and both Dickinson and Mikheyev have a great deal of value to the Blackhawks on and off the ice. My two cents in this immediate moment: Mikheyev will likely have higher trade value before/at the deadline than Dickinson because he’s been healthy (knock on wood). Also, and importantly, if the Blackhawks don’t want to rush their next wave of centers — Sacha Boisvert, AJ Spellacy — to the NHL, another year or two from Dickinson would help stabilize the bottom six. As much as I love Mikheyev’s game, the Blackhawks are going to have more wings knocking down the NHL door sooner than centers.

Jason Dickinson or Ilya Mikheyev? The Blackhawks might eventually have to make a difficult decision about which of the two to re-sign.They're both pending UFAs, and space must be cleared for incoming prospects.New story: t.co/C8YlPGymZg

    — Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) November 13, 2025 Terrific read from Scott Powers this weekend on the development from the Blackhawks’ top pick from this past summer’s NHL draft, Anton Frondell. This paragraph specifically had my attention:

Part of why [Djurgården coach Robert] Kimby sometimes has put Frondell on the wing instead of at center is to relieve some of that self-imposed pressure to be responsible. If Kimby had a knock on Frondell’s game right now, it’d be that he’s too unselfish. It’s actually something the Blackhawks think about Frondell’s game, too.

“With the skill set he has, the shot he has, we want him to be a little bit more selfish sometimes.”How Blackhawks prospect Anton Frondell’s Djurgården season is progressing t.co/9h1HAosyvo

How about some Blackhawks prospect highlights?

Parker Holmes had an assist on Brantford’s 3-2 OT loss to Flint. No points for Marek Vanacker. Václav Nestrašil had two assists but UMass got thumped by Boston College, suffering a 7-3 loss. John Mustard failed to record a point for the first time this season, but Julius Sumpf had an assist as Providence beat Merrimack 4-2. Adam Gajan stopped 23 of 25 as Minnesota-Duluth beat Omaha 5-2. What’s Mason West up to these days? Just chuckin’ dimes and winning playoff games! West had a big night Thursday.

First round @NHLBlackhawks NHL draft pick @MasonWest2026 threw for 314 yards and four touchdowns tonight and also ran for another to lead Edina to the Prep Bowl with a 42-41 win over Minnetonka. ? @AJPhotographymn pic.twitter.com/pzVN83KLJt

    Around the NHL

Golden Knights forward William Karlsson is week-to-week due to a lower-body injury. The Blackhawks visit Vegas on Dec. 2, so we’ll see if Karlsson is back in time for that matchup. The Oilers placed defenseman Troy Stecher on waivers Friday and assigned forward Isaac Howard to the AHL, clearing the deck (and cap space) for Zach Hyman to return to their lineup. The Canadiens announced center Alex Newhook will miss four months after undergoing surgery for a fractured ankle and defenseman Kaiden Guhle underwent surgery to repair a torn adductor and will miss 8-to-10 weeks. The Blackhawks will miss both of them when they visit Montreal on Dec. 18. And… yeah…. a team dinner at Chicago Cut on an extra day in Chicago ended up making the name of a fantastic steakhouse a bad internet pun for Devils fans.
