New York City-based halal restaurant opens first Orange County spot

Starting as a single food cart in Queens, New York, in 2005, Shah’s Halal, a fast-food chain specializing in halal-certified meat dishes and vegetarian options, has since expanded to more than 120 locations nationwide. The chain is now marking a new milestone, officially opens its first Orange County location in Fullerton on Friday, Nov. 14.

“Fullerton is a city with a dynamic population,” said CEO Khalid Mashriqi in a written response. “With its mix of students and residents who love exploring new culinary experiences, and as our first Shah’s location in Orange County, we’re excited to welcome guests visiting Honda Center, Angel Stadium and California State University Fullerton.”

    Shah’s Halal’s dishes includes chicken, lamb, kofta, fish or falafel gyros; rice with falafel, kofta, fish or lamb; hummus with pita; and baklava for dessert. Other items include a chicken cheesesteak sandwich, a crispy chicken sandwich, cheeseburger, Philly cheese steak sandwich, a build-your-own salad, fries and more.

    Mashriqi told Eater in 2019 that his restaurants’ recipes stem from family recipes.

    Halal menus have seen a rise in popularity as of late. According to the Halal Council USA, “the halal food industry has witnessed unprecedented growth in the USA, driven by both the expanding Muslim population and a growing awareness of halal food among non-Muslim consumers” who seek “healthier, ethically-sourced” fare.

    Halal is an Arabic term meaning “permissible” or lawful under Islamic dietary laws, somewhat akin to kosher in Judaism. This means the fare much exclude anything like pork, pork byproducts or alcohol. Meat must be slaughtered in a comparatively humane method, ensuring ethical treatment of the animal.
