Dave Burgess, the band leader of the rock and roll group The Champs, died at the age of 90 on Oct. 19. He died in Dover, Tennessee, with his cause of death not being reported.
During the late 50s, Burgess was the leader of The Champs, who found long-lasting recognition for their hit song "Tequila." It was released in 1958 and created by Burgess' bandmate, the saxophonist Chuck Rio (real name Daniel Flores).
The record company didn't originally see the song as the band's big hit, and it was released as an instrumental B-side on the group's debut single. Burgess's penned song "Train to Nowhere" was meant to be the band's money maker.
Instead, "Tequila" quickly topped the music charts months later after its January release, thanks to DJs playing the B-side track. With its unique sound of instrumentals and its shouted one-word lyric, "Tequila", the rest was history.
The Champs' "Tequila" became a sensation, even winning the award for Best R&B Performance at the first-ever Grammy Awards in that same year. The song has since become a pop culture staple, appearing in Tim Burton's film Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, a running meme, and even on America's Got Talent.
In 2020, Burgess released a revived version of The Champs with the album Tequila Party. It involved a newer version of the band's iconic hit.
In 1959, Burgess married dancer and actor Deon Adair Raab, who appeared in an array of Elvis Presley movies. After music fame calmed down, they left California and moved to Montana to open an art gallery.
Brugess's love for music never went away and the family moved to Nashville, Tennessee. Throughout his career, The Champs leader is credited with 700 songs.
His obituary reads that he was an "avid hunter and fisher," and survived by his son, David. His wife and daughter, Charmaine, preceded Brugess's death.
