One down and two to go.
The University of Northern Colorado volleyball team took another step toward a regular-season Big Sky Conference title Thursday evening, sweeping Idaho State in three sets at Bank of Colorado Arena in Greeley.
UNC defeated the Bengals 25-21, 25-19, 25-21 in the first and only match of the season between the schools. The match was the start of the three-match homestand to end the regular season. If UNC wins all three, the Bears will earn the top seed for the conference tournament later this month.
UNC hosts Weber State on Saturday evening and conference-leading Northern Arizona in the finale Friday, Nov. 21.
UNC will host the Big Sky tournament Nov. 24-26 at Bank of Colorado Arena.

(Brice Tucker/Staff Photographer)“It was good to get a sweep tonight,” UNC head coach Lyndsey Oates said. “These are really important matches, and the key to the match I’d say is not about the outcome, it’s about playing excellent volleyball. Are we improving still? Is this the best version of ourselves on Nov. 13?”
The Bears (13-14) didn’t play excellent volleyball throughout the match against the Bengals (9-16, 5-8), but they played well enough in a few areas, Oates said. She said UNC blocked well against the Bengals, who are strong in that area, and the Bears even left chances on the court for more block opportunities. Both teams had 11 blocks and UNC’s Isabel Bennett led all players with seven.
Oates said the Bears’ serve was effective against Idaho State because it was unpredictable.
“We did some good things,” the coach said of the Bears’ night. “We have to clean up some of our errors. We overpassed too many balls. We got aced on too many balls. Our serve-receive wasn’t as clean as it should be. We didn’t connect our middles (middle blockers) as good as we normally do.”
Both Sacramento State and UNC trail Northern Arizona in the conference standings. The Lumberjacks improved to 11-4 in the Big Sky after pulling out a reverse sweep against Weber State at home Thursday evening.
