Kings top Maple Leafs on Quinton Byfield’s overtime goal

TORONTO — The road warriors rang up another win.

Quinton Byfield scored on a one-timer 35 seconds into overtime to give the Kings a 4-3 victory over the injury-plagued Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night.

Warren Foegele, Kevin Fiala and Alex Laferriere also scored for the Kings, who won their fifth straight road game and extended their road points streak to nine games (7-0-2). The Kings have won three games in a row overall and four of their past five to improve to 9-5-4 overall (8-1-2 on the road).

Darcy Kuemper made 12 saves, and defenseman Drew Doughty had two assists.

John Tavares scored twice for Toronto, Bobby McMann added a goal and Dennis Hildeby stopped 33 shots. The Maple Leafs have lost four straight to drop to 8-8-2.

Toronto played without captain Auston Matthews (lower-body injury) and goalie Anthony Stolarz (upper-body injury) after both left Tuesday night in a 5-4 loss at Boston.

Toronto showed improved defensive play in the first period and took a 2-0 lead on goals from McMann and Tavares.

McMann scored an unassisted goal at 8:06 when he stole the puck in the Toronto defensive zone and broke in alone and his shot to the blocker side rolled over the line.

Tavares scored from the low slot at 16:39, converting a pass from Oliver Eckman-Larsson. Kings defenseman Brian Dumoulin was out of the play after being clipped by a stick.

Toronto’s William Nylander clanked a high shot off the right post on a breakaway at 18:55 of the first after coming out of the penalty box.

The Kings scored at 6:51 of the second period, taking advantage of a tired Toronto defense that had put in a long shift. Foegele’s shot from the left circle went under Hildeby’s glove.

The Kings again took advantage of a long Toronto shift to tie the score at 15:51 of the second on Fiala’s sharp-angled wrist shot from close range after a barrage of shots.

Tavares responded at 17:16 with a goal on a sweeping backhand from the edge of the crease after Nylander’s pass found him.

Hildeby rose to the occasion at 8:27 of the third when he foiled Corey Perry from close range.

But Lafferriere tied the score again at 13:10 of the third period when he tipped in Brandt Clarke’s point shot.
