The Dietrich family has lived through the kind of nightmare most people can’t imagine once, let alone twice. Connor and Brandon, two brothers who survived the 2018 Parkland school shooting, are now at the center of another heartbreaking situation — this time in Tampa.
On Saturday, November 8, the siblings were in Ybor City when a driver fleeing police sped through the district and slammed into a crowded bar patio. Multiple people were killed in the crash. “What happened this morning was a senseless tragedy, our hearts are with the loved ones of the victims and all those who were impacted,” Chief Lee Bercaw said in a statement.
Brandon was treated and cleared. Connor took the worst of the impact and was rushed into emergency surgery with skull fractures, a lacerated spleen, and multiple broken bones. His family says he remains in critical condition. “We just don’t know,” the brother’s father told WKYC. “I don’t know if I’m going to have my son back.”

A GoFundMe started by their uncle, Bill Muter, explains just how devastating the situation is. He wrote that he’s fundraising so Connor’s parents can stay at the hospital instead of worrying about bills, calling the road ahead “long, uncertain, and incredibly difficult.” The page is now filling with donations — many from people who remember the boys’ names from Parkland.
Meanwhile, the prayers and support have been pouring in across social media. “They truly have angels protecting them. Prayers for a speedy recovery and emotional healing,” one person wrote on Facebook. “How tragic! Prayers lifted for healing for them both!” another commented. Over on X (formerly Twitter), a third person added, “Can you believe this? One of the kids that survived Parkland only to become a victim of the car crashing into the bar in Ybor City. Heartbreaking.”
View this post on InstagramThe crash reopens wounds the Dietrichs spent years trying to heal. Back in February 2018, both brothers were inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School when a gunman opened fire, killing 17 people and injuring 17 more. It remains one of the deadliest school shootings in American history.
As for the driver accused of causing the Ybor incident, police have identified him as 22-year-old Silas Kenneth Sampson of Dade City. Investigators say he was speeding through the area while fleeing a traffic stop when he lost control and barreled into the patio outside Bradley’s on 7th. He was arrested at the scene and is now facing a growing list of felony charges — including “four counts of vehicular homicide,” according to court documents obtained by AP News — and a judge has ordered him to remain in jail while the case moves forward.
