The i Paper’s Yasmin Alibhai-Brown and Ian Birrell win Media Freedom Awards

The i Paper’s Yasmin Alibhai-Brown has been named 2025 Commentator of the Year at the prestigious Media Freedom Awards, which honour excellence in campaigning and investigative journalism.

Judges praised her writing on Britain’s carers – “the millions of extraordinary people who give up jobs, freedoms, leisure and many other pleasures to care for vulnerable children, siblings, parents or grandparents they deeply love”. Alibhai-Brown argued that carers are being persecuted by the DWP.

Judges also applauded her article on the grooming gangs that target young white girls in UK towns. She did what few journalists had bothered to do: speak to men and women of Pakistani heritage about these crimes.

Alibhai-Brown “highlights the real people behind every decision,” noted judges, “bringing an unmistakable campaigning zeal to her columns.”

During Alibhai-Brown’s acceptance speech at the Globe Theatre in London, she paid tribute to The i Paper’s readers and staff. She took home the prize in the broadsheet category.

Her colleague Ian Birrell was named Columnist of the Year (Popular) for his work in The i Paper and the Daily Mail.

Ian Birrell was named Columnist of the Year

His entry included a powerful column in The i Paper about the Commons vote for assisted dying. Birrell argued it was “death on demand”, adding: “Those suffering the consequences will be the most marginalised in our society… Think of those blanket ‘do not resuscitate’ notices imposed on people with learning disabilities in the pandemic, and autistic people locked up for years in psychiatric units despite acceptance that it is medically and morally wrong.”

Judges called Birrell’s journalism “compelling, courageous, compassionate and thought-provoking”.

Ian Dunt was shortlisted for Commentator of the Year (Broadsheet) for his columns for The i Paper. Judges praised the way he “writes with urgency about democracy’s fragility, driven by his eloquent fury at the rise of populism… His emotionally charged columns highlight global threats to liberal values and the role of democracy as the foundation of a functioning, tolerant society.”

The i Paper’s chief political commentator Kitty Donaldson was shortlisted for Political Journalist of the Year for her exclusives on Keir Starmer’s winter fuel U-turn and on Chinese spies working in the UK. “Another agenda-setting scoop,” the judges concluded.

The awards show the strength of The i Paper’s opinion columnists and news reporting, said editor-in-chief Oliver Duff.

The i Paper was shortlisted for the environment journalism prize for its Save Britain’s Rivers campaign, led by environment correspondent Lucie Heath. Judges praised “key wins” in the fight to stop illegal sewage dumping.

The i Paper was also shortlisted for News Media Organisation of the Year. Judges said: “The i Paper regularly sets the news agenda with its campaigning zeal and standout scoops, ensuring the public’s right to know is protected against the instincts of officials to conceal and obfuscate.
