The PlayStation 5 is now five whole years old, but despite its age, it's going strong and putting up some mighty sales figures.
Sony is no stranger to high sales for its consoles, and the PS5 is just the latest in a long line of success stories.
So, if you're curious about how many PS5 consoles have been sold and how it compares to other consoles and companies, here's what you need to know.
PS5 sales numbers: How many units has it sold?
At the time of writing, the PS5 has officially sold more than 84.2 million units, making it the ninth highest-selling console of all time, and seventh highest-selling home console.
This was announced by Sony in November 2025, and accounts for sales up to 30th September 2025 – so that doesn't even account for any sales since then!
This huge figure means the PS5 has passed a rather significant (and somewhat embarrassing for Xbox) figure, as the PS5 has now sold more than every Xbox console ever released.
For reference, the latest figures we have for the Xbox 360 are from 2014, stating that the console sold 84 million units, so this may well be somewhat out of date by now.
When we compare with other Sony hardware, we see that, while the PS5 is still the lowest-selling PlayStation home console, it is only 3 million sales away from overtaking the PS3, which sits on 87.4 million.
Beyond that, while the PS5 may one day overtake the PS1's 102 million sales, it seems unlikely to overtake the PS4's 117 million, and nigh-on impossible that it will beat the world record-holding PS2, which tops the list with 160 million sales.
Among modern consoles, the PS5 is doing well, having sold nearly 60 million more units than the Xbox Series X/S. But it's still far behind the 154 million Nintendo Switch consoles sold thus far.
And with Switch 2 sales already ticking up, Sony will be hoping that those PS5 sales continue long into the future, or at least until they finally release the PS6.
