SEVENTEEN member HOSHI dropped a surprise solo single on Tuesday (Nov. 11) the sad boy lament “Fallen Superstar.” The skittery ballad co-written by Andrew Goldstein (Maroon 5, Katy Perry) and singer-songwriter JXDN is the 29-year-old K-pop star’s first solo effort entirely in English following on the heels of March’s Beam EP, a three-track collaboration with SEVENTEEN bandmate Woozi.

“You’re just a fallen superstar/ The way you fall into my arms,” HOSHI sings in AutoTuned vocals over a gently plucked acoustic guitar in the intro to the frenetic pop tune about two wounded people who find love in a hopeless place. The beat picks up for the first verse, as HOSHI expands on his celestial love affair, singing, “In my dreams I made a promise/ That I would find somebody to fix everything/ And I’m usually heartless/ But then I found somebody as broken as me.”
The video for the song finds HOSHI performing in a blank void, posted up on a giant silver guitar as the object of his affection plugs in and starts strumming. They can’t seem to connect, with the only thread keeping them tethered coming in the form of a shiny silver metal guitar pick bearing the phrase “You’re just a fallen superstar.” Midway through, it’s HOSHI who is falling through space, landing inside the guitar, with his intended shaking it and tossing it through a window until it dislodges him onto the ground in a heap of splintered wood and wire.
HOSHI began his mandatory South Korean military service in September, dropping his first digital solo single, the uptempo hip-hop basketball-focused “Take a Shot” on the same day he shipped out as a farewell gift to fans.
In the midst of the current military stints by members JEONGHAN, WONWOO, HOSHI and WOOZI, SEVENTEEN gave Carats something to remember them by last week with the release of the 10th anniversary Disney+ doc series SEVENTEEN: Our Chapter.
