Chad Michael Murray just opened up about the One Tree Hill scene he nearly refused to film — and if you’re a fan, you probably already know which infamous moment he’s talking about.
During an interview with his co-star and on-screen brother James Lafferty for People's Sexiest Man Alive issue, the actor, who played Lucas Scott on the teen drama, revealed the "terrible" scene he tried to get out of shooting.
In a season 6 episode, Lucas' father, Dan Scott (Paul Johansson) is at the hospital awaiting a heart transplant when the person carrying the organ drops it on the floor — just for it to be gobbled up by a golden retriever.
"I remember I begged and pleaded, begged and pleaded, 'Please, I don't need to be there. There is no need for Lucas Scott to be there. If you really want to do it, fine. Go ahead and write the scene, but it's terrible,'" he said.
The actor called the scene "promotional" and theorized that the show only did it so that it could appear on The Soup, a television show that provided sarcastic and satirical commentary on pop culture clips from 2004 to 2015.
Murray then proceeded to explain how improbable the scene was.
"I'll set it up for you, ready?" he began. "All things are very possible, I guess in the spectrum of things, so if you're at home and making pot brownies, as one does, and you fell asleep and your dog happened to get into said pot brownies and ingest the entire tin, first thing of course you're gonna do is take him to the ER."
"Next, we're gonna obviously get exhausted 'cause we also ate some of these said pot brownies and fell asleep," he continued. "And then, of course, if you're going to bring a heart replacement in, it's coming in right through the ER. And it's not locked off, the case is not locked off."
"It's going to walk right in through those doors, where, in fact, my dad is waiting to get said heart," he added. "He's not in the prepping room, and, if you have a [leash] in the middle of the ER, you will trip. And the [case] flies and the heart goes skidding across the room. It's not in a package, it's just sitting right there on top of ice."
Murray concluded, "Somehow the dog got off the leash, we're not sure how, but he did. Of course, I happen to be there. and as I'm standing there, he scarfs [the heart] up and runs off."
Lafferty called his co-star's retelling of the scene "impressive" with Murray adding that the scene "went down in infamy."
Nearly 20 years after it first aired, both actors revealed they're still asked about the "jumping the shark" moment "all the time."
One Tree Hill aired from 2003 to 2012 on the WB and the CW.
