Trump Hosts Syria’s al-Sharaa for Closed-Door White House Talks

Syria’s transitional president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, held a closed-door meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at 11 a.m. Washington time on Monday, November 10, which was 7 p.m. in Damascus.

Reuters reported that al-Sharaa arrived at the White House without the customary protocol usually afforded to foreign leaders. He entered through a side entrance out of reporters’ view rather than the main West Wing door where cameras are normally set up.

The U.S. administration described the visit as a historic step that paves the way to test the possibility of returning Damascus to a diplomatic track after more than a decade of war and isolation, according to Fox News on Monday, November 10.

A senior administration official told the network that the visit would focus on counterterrorism cooperation, economic development, and strengthening regional peace and security.

According to the same official, Syria is expected to announce during the visit its formal accession to the Global Coalition to Defeat the Islamic State group as the 90th member. Washington described this as pivotal for closing the file of terrorism in the region and for stopping the flow of foreign fighters.

The official added that the U.S. Departments of the Treasury, State, and Commerce would issue a joint announcement on lifting certain economic restrictions and clarifying compliance mechanisms for investors. He said the United States would allow the reopening of the Syrian Embassy in Washington to enhance coordination on security, counterterrorism, and economic issues.

He confirmed that the administration had decided to suspend enforcement of the Caesar Act for 180 days and would urge Congress to repeal it permanently to open the way for economic growth, noting that the Trump administration supports full repeal in line with the president’s policy of ending sanctions and creating a new investment climate in Syria.

Republican Representative Abraham Hamadeh of Arizona, who visited Damascus in August, told the network that the visit is an opportunity to end years of bloodshed. He said he went to Damascus to ensure that missing Americans such as Kayla Mueller are not forgotten, to call for expanding the Abraham Accords, and to urge Syria’s new leadership to include minorities such as Druze, Christians, and Kurds and protect their rights.

Hamadeh said he wrote a provision in the National Defense Authorization Act regarding assessing the feasibility of building defense partnerships with the new Syrian government. He added that the United States must ensure the Islamic State group and Iranian influence do not return to the region and that a safe distance is maintained from Russia and China.

Earlier today, Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, said the priority in Syria at present is the economy, which will be the focus of al-Sharaa’s visit to Washington. He pointed to U.S. sanctions and the importance of lifting them.

Olabi told Saudi Arabia’s Al Arabiya channel that discussions between Syria and Israel are ongoing and that security arrangements along border points, including delineations, troop numbers, and each side’s security concerns, are the core of these talks.

He added that the United States supports these discussions and that at the United Nations, there is talk of Israel returning to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, a central topic at the Security Council. He said this is Syria’s starting point.

We are not speaking solely about Israeli matters, he said, but about achieving stability, peace, and security for Syrians so that the reconstruction process begun after liberation can continue. He said that if an agreement is reached, it will be announced directly to the Syrian people.

    Al-Sharaa in Washington

President Ahmad al-Sharaa arrived in the United States on November 8. This is his second visit to America, following his previous trip to attend the 80th UN General Assembly in New York.

During his meeting with representatives of Syrian organizations in the United States, the Syrian president said sanctions on Syria are in their final stages, calling for continued efforts until they are fully lifted. He described the current opportunity before Syrians as a rare one that should be seized.

Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, said in a November 4 interview with Syrian al-Ikhbariya that al-Sharaa’s visit to the White House would be an unprecedented event and a qualitative shift in the diplomatic context.

This will be the third meeting between al-Sharaa and Trump, after one in Riyadh, hosted by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on May 14, and another in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on September 25.
