Reuters reported that Syrian authorities thwarted two separate attempts by the Islamic State group to assassinate Syria’s transitional president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, in recent months.
On Monday, November 10, the agency cited two senior sources, one Syrian and one from a Middle Eastern country, as saying that one of the attempts targeted a publicly announced official event that al-Sharaa was due to attend. They declined to provide further details due to the sensitivity of the matter.
Syria’s Ministry of Information declined to comment when contacted by Reuters.
The report on the two assassination attempts comes as the Syrian president is visiting Washington to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in the first visit by a Syrian president to the White House. It is expected that Syria will formally announce its accession to the International Coalition against the Islamic State group during the visit.

Al-Sharaa in Washington
President Ahmad al-Sharaa arrived in the United States on November 8. This is his second visit to America, following his previous trip to attend the 80th UN General Assembly in New York.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in her November 4 briefing that President Trump would meet President Ahmad al-Sharaa at the White House.
“We have seen good progress toward peace under Syria’s new leadership,” she added.
During his meeting with representatives of Syrian organizations in the United States, the Syrian president said sanctions on Syria are in their final stages, calling for continued efforts until they are fully lifted. He described the current opportunity before Syrians as a rare one that should be seized.
Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, said in a November 4 interview with Syrian al-Ikhbariya that al-Sharaa’s visit to the White House would be an unprecedented event and a qualitative shift in the diplomatic context.
This will be the third meeting between al-Sharaa and Trump, after one in Riyadh, hosted by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on May 14, and another in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on September 25.
