— NFL (@NFL) November 9, 2025Paul Tagliabue had a whale of a run as the NFL’s commissioner from Nov. 5, 1989 until Sept. 1, 2006. He was preceded by legenary NFL head Pete Rozelle and was succeeded by active NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Tagliabue’s time in the NFL was highlighted by keeping the Saints in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, his handling of game postponements after the September 11 attacks in 2001, moving Super Bowl XXVII to California after taking a stance against Arizona for not recognizing Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a state holiday, and the launch of expansion teams including the Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Houston Texans.
Mr. Tagliabue left a lasting legacy, and one that is hard to top for modern pro sports commissioners. May he rest in peace.
