PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks prospect Jose Fernandez clubbed a no-doubter home run to left field in his major league debut on Tuesday against the Detroit Tigers.
It was the second at-bat of the 22-year-old’s big league career after he was called up on Monday. Fernandez’s eyes must have lit up when he saw a 1-0 slider hang right over the center of the plate from right-handed pitcher Casey Mize.

Fernandez had checked his first career hit off the list in his first plate appearance, as he beat out a throw for an infield single. This time, the ball rocketed off his bat at 104 mph and easily cleared the wall. His swing was measured at 79 mph, which is elite speed.
Mize, an All-Star last season, did not allow another run through six innings of work.

The Diamondbacks called Fernandez up after he played one game for Triple-A Reno. Arizona needed another bat with Pavin Smith placed on the injured list with a left elbow issue.
The infielder started at third base and hit sixth in the lineup on Tuesday after turning heads in a standout spring training.
Fernandez became the eighth hitter in Diamondbacks history to blast a home run in his MLB debut, according to Stathead.
The first player to do so was Travis Lee in 1998, the first Diamondbacks game in history. The most recent before Fernandez was Seth Beer in 2021.
