Actress Alison Arngrim starred as Laura Ingalls' (Melissa Gilbert) classroom adversary, Nellie Oleson, in the beloved historical drama, Little House on the Prairie, which had a 9-season run.
Arngrim stepped away from the series, despite the popularity of her bratty character, after Season 7, per IMDb. She appeared in a single Season 9 episode, "The Return of Nellie," which aired in 1982.
ReMind Magazine reported that Arngrim has been candid about why she departed the series. According to the publication, Arngrim let her fans know that she was bored by Nellie's story arc in her 2010 memoir, Confessions of a Prairie B---h. She explained that once Nellie and Percival Dalton (Steve Tracy) wed during Season 6, her character lost her edge.
"Nellie, now ‘reformed’ by her marriage to Percival, had become bland and boring. I didn’t seem to have much to do. I felt a distinct lack of excitement. Was I really going to sign up for another several years of this? How many would they want? … I hoped not another seven. That would make it a 14-year run! I would be nearly 30 years old before I got off this thing! … I felt sick to my stomach at the thought," wrote Arngrim in her memoir, per ReMind Magazine.
ReMind Magazine also reported that Arngrim said NBC "refused all requests from my agent for raises, extra episodes, or any type of concession he suggested, no matter how small."
"The lawyers at NBC simply refused to negotiate. It was unfair. I was loyal to the network for seven years, yet there was no loyalty being shown to me. My agent and dad were enraged, but despite their pride and anger, they told me the final call was up to me," stated Arngrim.
Arngrim opted to not sign the contract and fans didn't get to see Nellie again until the lone Season 9 episode, per ReMind.
Arngrim made similar comments about exiting Little House on the Prairie after playing Nellie for seven years in a July 2024 episode of her podcast, Little House 50 Podcast, co-hosted by Pamela Bob and her Little House on the Prairie co-star Dean Butler. According to Arngrim, she was asked to return to the show after the seventh season. She said, however, that her agent asked NBC to give her "more money" and "more episodes" that focused on Nellie. However, the requests were denied. She also said that she didn't want to be stuck playing a character with a limited storyline.
According to the actress, she only had one line in the final Season 7 episode she filmed for the series.
"I said 'Two more lamb stews please and more coffee,'" recalled Arngrim on her podcast.
