When heading west on 9th Street on the one way toward 23rd Avenue, take some time. Slow down. And definitely keep an eye on the left side of the road.

Just past 16th Avenue, 30-year-old Greeley artist Alonzo Harrison has added a little color to the drive with a mural at the Bargain Box Thrift Store, 1706 9th St.

On Friday afternoon, The Bargain Box hosted a dedication for the mural — a vaquera, or Mexican cowgirl — sitting proudly on a horse in front of a Colorado sunset.

“It’s super awesome,” Harrison said. “You always hope that, doing this type of work, you can have hyper-visible pieces. And my grandparents live just a few blocks down from it, so it fills me with a sense of pride. I’m thrilled about it.”

The idea for the imagery came primarily from the Bargain Box’s staff. Several woman — many retired — volunteer daily to keep The Bargain Box running and able to give back to the community in the way it does.

“I wanted something to represent that matriarchal presence in our community that’s doing so much,” Harrison said. “I did a vaquera to sort of embody that spirit, while also being true to my Mexican-American heritage.”

Once he knew what he wanted it to represent, the other decisions fell right into place. It was always going to be something flashy and easy to digest as you drive past on 9th Street, which set the stage for one of Harrison’s favorite parts of living in Greeley: the sunsets.

“I’m such a big fan of the Colorado sky and the sunsets,” Harrison said. “But I also wanted to channel some of that northern Colorado outdoor pride.”

This isn’t the first mural of Harrison’s that those in Greeley have likely seen. He also has a mural at Sushi One on 10th Street and was featured in last year’s WeldWalls Mural Festival.

The Bargain Box wasn’t even originally where the mural was slated to go up. Harrison was originally supposed to paint the mural at Houston Gardens on 23rd Avenue near 5th Street. He even had the grant secured and the money in pocket when he learned that the building it was planned to go on was historically registered.

“I just started reaching out to people in the community and found that The Bargain Box was looking for something like this,” he said.

It was the community that got him to The Bargain Box. And once he was there, it was that community that made him realize how important his work was.

“The thing I enjoyed most about this mural was that so many people would stop and talk to me while I was working,” Harrison said. “Several people told me they had been watching the progress of the painting everyday as they drove home from work. So there was this huge element of community. So many other people were involved with the process vicariously, and it was this big shared experience, even though I didn’t always realize.”
