Brought to you by Spectrum Aquatics, a SwimSwam partner, our Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming series celebrates swimmers of every age and experience level with age group profiles of some recent results.

Erica Wang, 10, Lakeside Aquatic Club (NT): Wang had a phenomenal performance at the North Texas MAC A/BB meet last weekend, setting six best times and climbing the all-time rankings in the girls 10 & under age group. Her headlining swim came in the 100 breast, where Wang clocked 1:10.80 to rank 21st all-time in the 10 & under age group and 1st this season, improving on her previous best of 1:14.77 set in March. She also went 32.99 in the 50 breast, good for 35th all-time in the age group and 3rd this season, and in the 100 IM, her time of 1:05.13 ranks her 64th all-time and 2nd this season. She added bests in the 50 free (27.00), 50 back (30.21) and 100 back (1:07.68), which rank 5th, 2nd and 8th this season among 10 & under girls.

Jacob Lee, 12, Rose Bowl Aquatics (CA): Lee produced best times across the board at the “Our Rising Tides” 16 & Under SC meet last weekend, highlighted by a pair of standout swims in the breaststroke events. In the 50 breast, Lee improved his month-old best time of 28.49 in 28.30, ranking him 23rd all-time in the boys’ 11-12 age group and 1st this season. In the prelims of the 100 breast, he knocked more than three seconds off his best time in 1:02.23, ranking him 49th all-time in the age group and 1st this season. He followed that up by clocking 1:02.63 in the final. He added best times in the 200 breast (2:24.01), ranking him 8th this season among 11-12s, and in the 50 free (24.91).

Caite Schaffel, 15, Iowa Flyers Swim Club (IA): Schaffel has had a strong start to her high school career at Linn-Mar High in Marion, Iowa, setting a personal best time in 200 IM (2:05.70) and also swimming the 100 breast (1:04.27) at the MVC Swimming & Diving Championships two weeks ago in Cedar Falls. Heading into the Ames Regional Championships this weekend, as a freshman, Schaffel ranks 1st in the state in the 200 IM and 2nd in the 100 breast. Her previous PB in the 200 IM stood at 2:06.64, while in the 100 breast, she’s been as fast as 1:02.79, both set at the IASI Short Course Championships this past winter.

Noah Safa, 12, Scarborough Swim Club (Canada): Safa set three new Canadian Age Group Records for 11-12 boys at last weekend’s Cindy Nicholas Memorial meet in Unionville, Ontario, where he was a perfect eight-for-eight in personal best times. Safa set new SCM NAG records in the 100 back (1:00.53), 100 fly (59.65) and 200 IM (2:15.11), breaking the previous records of 1:00.85 in the 100 back (set by Lucas Bi in 2014), 1:00.26 in the 100 fly (set by Safa in October) and 2:15.94 in the 200 IM (set by Matthew Cao in 2023). Safa also produced the fastest time in Canadian history in the boys’ 11-12 in the 50 fly (27.23), though official NAG records are tracked in the stroke 50s. It was, however, an Ontario Provincial Record, as were his performances in the 100 free (55.56) and 200 back (2:12.30). All-time, he ranks 2nd among 11-12 boys in Canada in the 50 back (28.58), 4th in both the 100 free and 200 back, and 11th in the 50 free (25.77).

Vanya Gojakovic, 17, NASA Wildcat Aquatics (IL): Gojakovic reset a pair of Evanston Township High School Records at the Central Suburban League South division meet last weekend, setting four lifetime bests in the process. Leading off the 200 free relay, Gojakovic clocked 23.60 in the 50 free, breaking a 35-year-old school record previously held by current Evanston assistant coach Heidi Toft. Gojakovic also set a school record in the 200 IM with her time of 2:04.41, came within a half second of Olivia Smoliga‘s school record en route to winning the 100 back (55.97), and added another best time in the 50 back (25.83) leading off the 200 medley relay.

Anna Maria Daskalaki, 14, Greece: Daskalaki broke an 11-year-old Greek Record in the girls’ 200 breaststroke (SCM) at the 2nd Short Course Performance Meet last weekend in Crete, putting up a time of 2:33.26. The swim broke the record for 14-year-old girls of 2:34.21, set by Nikoletta Pavlopoulou in 2014. Daskalaki has been faster in the long course pool, however, clocking 2:33.02 this past June, which stands as the Greek record for 14-year-old girls in the big pool. Dasalaki also won the 50 breast (33.64) and 100 breast (1:12.18) at the meet, setting a new PB in the 50 and narrowly missing her 1:11.61 best in the 100 set on Oct. 19.
