The A’s are dumping old friend Aaron Civale after a brutal stretch of performances (around and after a bout of shoulder tendinitis). On the one hand, there may just be nothing there, especially if there’s a shoulder issue. On the other hand, I still can’t shake how good he looked as a reliever last year with the Cubs. On the other hand, the sample was small enough that I really shouldn’t be going too far with this, and the Cubs already have a veritable overload of reclamation veterans at Iowa that they’re trying to coax into some big league utility. Also on that hand, he really was quite bad with the A’s overall. But back to the original hand, that was as a starter, and I’m talking about him as a reliever option, if he’s open to the move. Also, like most A’s pitchers, his splits were EXTREME. He was absolutely a disaster in Sacramento, but closer to average on the road (and was actually frequently nails against righties). As I said, the Cubs might be full up on these types at this point, but what’s another minor league deal between friends? As expected, yesterday’s Brewers-Astros trade was less about the Brewers getting Lance McCullers Jr., and more about them taking part of his contract on in exchange for receiving Triple-A lefty Colton Gordon. The full particulars are that the Brewers take on $2.5 million of McCullers’ deal (essentially that’s just them cutting the Astros a check, though I suppose I shouldn’t completely rule out the Brewers getting something useful out of McCullers), and the Astros are getting 21-year-old Low-A outfielder Jadyn Fielder. Although he does not appear to be a serious prospect at this point, Fielder is nevertheless notable for being Prince Fielder’s son. Which is freaking wild, because, as Michael exclaimed in a text, “Prince was already the son!” Of Cecil Fielder, he meant. And, by extension, he meant that we are old. The whole thing got me looking back at Cecil’s and Prince’s careers, remembering how each was a monster in his mid-20s, and then fell off pretty hard around 30. With Prince, in particular, the fall was especially sharp, likely in large part because of severe disc issues in his neck, that ultimately required spinal fusion surgeries that ended his career permanently at just 32 years old. From 2007 through 2012, Fielder (the younger (er, well, the middle)) hit .289/.401/.549/148 wRC+, and terrorized Cubs pitchers for much of that time. In a long, long piece full of tons and tons of players, asked what one skill they’d steal from another player if they could, I found it interesting that not one single player wanted to steal some other player’s defense. The only mention that even came close was someone wanting to steal Bobby Witt Jr.’s quick first step at short. If I were some hulking slugger and they asked me what I would steal, why on earth wouldn’t I say “Pete Crow-Armstrong’s defense”? Is that too much to be one “skill”? Because if not, that’s the best way to dramatically increase your value in an instant – there’s a reason PCA leads baseball in WAR! I’m not saying that’s the singular right answer, mind you. I’m just saying it’s bizarre that out of like 100 players, not one single player is saying that. Aaron Judge’s power, Trea Turner’s speed, Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s curveball, etc. All perfectly good and fine answers. But if you’re already an All-Star hitter, I guess I just don’t understand how not one single player wanted to become the best defender in baseball (PCA or Witt or pick your preferred defender). Maybe defense is somehow still underrated in the sport. No wonder the Cubs keep targeting it. Via translation, this report indicates the Red Sox are talking to the Nationals about a trade for superstar young outfielder James Wood:

Buenas tardes, mi Gente!Feliz miércoles!Los #RedSox inician las conversaciones por James Wood, puesto es el mercado por el equipo de #Nationals.El precio es alto, pero los #MediasRojas tienen el material armarle un paquete.El momento que vive #Boston, pide a gritos un…

It is absurd to such a degree that I share for one reason only: I love this silly time of year. Anthony Rizzo’s greatness, always underappreciated:

    — Jomboy Media (@JomboyMedia) July 16, 2026 Shohei Ohtani – a guy – did deserve the honor, though. We can’t forget that we may have witnessed the single greatest baseball performance (and at least top-5 of any sport) ever in his NLCS Game 4 showing: three home runs (and a walk), 6.0 shutout innings (10 K, 3 BB), and the win to sweep the Brewers.
