Letters: Reagan’s warning; health care in the U.S.

Reagan warned about those who would risk America’s prosperity

Once again our president has been caught lying to the American public.

In a Truth Social message Trump stated that a provincial Canada television ad said that “Ronald Reagan did not like tariffs, when actually he LOVED TARIFFS FOR OUR COUNTRY, AND ITS NATIONAL SECURITY.”

Both the ad and Trump are referring to a radio address to the nation by Reagan on April 25, 1987.

In fact Reagan said the following:

“Over the long run such trade barriers hurt every American worker and consumer.”

“…The United States have an obligation to promote the prosperity and economic development that only free trade can bring.”

“High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars.”

“Then the worst happens: Markets shrink and collapse; businesses and industries shut down; and millions of people lose their jobs.”

“The memory of all this occurring back in the ’30s made me determined when I came to Washington to spare the American people the protectionist legislation that destroys prosperity.”

If you wish to read the actual address, you can go the Reagan Presidential Library website at reaganlibrary.gov/archives/speech/radio-address-nation-free-and-fair-trade-4.

Before Trump, the Republican party had a firm commitment to free trade and economic growth. Where has it gone? As Reagan said in the same speech, “there are those … who want to go for the quick political advantage, who will risk America’s prosperity for the sake of a short-term appeal to some special interest group …”

Obviously Reagan was right. Such people are still here, and one is our president.

Other countries do better with health care than the U.S.

What do these countries have in common? China, Cuba, Vietnam?

If you said communist countries, you’re correct. Also, they offer their residents universal health care. What about these countries? Russia, Hungary, Turkey, Venezuela. Although ruled by oppressive authoritarian leaders, they, too, offer health care for all.

Our neighbors, Mexico and Canada, both have systems of universal health care. The country to which we recently sent $40 billion of our tax dollars, Argentina, provides health care to all residents. Israel and other democracies provide health care benefits for everyone. How is it that the world’s wealthiest country decided that only certain people are entitled to health care, while our care remains the most expensive on earth? And why do our representatives in Congress claim that they are “fighting” to keep health-care costs down as they continue to rise?

We have been carefully taught that profit-making corporations can best manage our health care, which has devolved into a baffling system of thousands of insurance plans, brokers, adjudicators and more. But Wall Street has a duty to profit and pay shareholders first, so our health takes a back seat. Also, Congress has decided that drug companies could charge whatever they want, which denied our government negotiating ability. Congresses’ Big Bill withheld help for Obamacare and much of Medicaid and even Medicare, citing high costs and the untruths that illegals can obtain federal coverage or “able bodied men who aren’t working” are cheating us.

Wouldn’t it be great if we all paid in and all were covered, none ineligible, and our health-care costs fell by half as a result — because they would. Politicians who take wads of cash from drug and insurance companies would fall silent and finally work to provide us all with the best America has to offer.
