As statewide competition increases, Eaton’s Delaney Reuter remains atop 3A

Delaney Reuter isn’t intimidated by competition.

If anything, Reuter’s competition is often intimidated by her.

So, as the competition intensified at this year’s Class 3A girls state cross country meet, Reuter embraced — and, as always, conquered it.

Reuter capped her junior cross country season by defending her state title Nov. 1 at the Norris-Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs.

She finished the challenging course in 17 minutes, 41.8 seconds.

She created a large enough gap between herself and a pair of standouts from The Classical Academy’s famed program: junior Vivian Jack (17:58.8) and sophomore Ellie Askew.

But that margin of victory actually shrunk from when she won the first state title of her increasingly dominant high school cross country/track career. She won the 3A race a year ago with a time of 17:26.90, almost a few minute faster than her closest competition, Alamosa’s then-senior Elizabeth McQuitty (18:21.18).

It’s not that Reuter is losing any steam.

The competition is just increasing, and Reuter is all for it.

“Kudos to The Classical Academy,” Reuter said on Wednesday afternoon. “They have a phenomenal running program. They’ve won state, I don’t know how many times. … Definitely, to repeat (as a state champion) is a huge accomplishment.”

After the initial championship-winning season Reuter had a year ago, ago strides she made this fall might have seemed like improving upon perfection.

But even though Reuter set what is so far her personal record time during her sophomore year, she feels she’s continuing to ascend to higher levels as a runner.

“Overall, I’ve improved in my times and I’ve improved as a runner,” Reuter said. “I’ve been able to take on more mileage, which I’ve been really happy about.”

While Reuter will officially begin her junior basketball season in about a month, she hasn’t packed up her running shoes for the winter quite yet.

In fact, in a few weeks, she’ll compete in one of the biggest and most challenging races she partakes in all year — the Nike Cross Regionals Southwest competition Nov. 22 at Toka Sticks Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona. She hopes to use that multi-state regional competition to qualify for nationals this summer in Eugene, Oregon.

“I’m really excited for regionals,” Reuter said. “It’s a fun course to run, a nice golf course. There’s good energy. And, usually, in the Southwest region, Colorado does pretty well. So, it’s fun to be with other Colorado runners and see them do well.”

Then, before she tries to win another individual state title or two during the track season this spring, Reuter will pursue a team state title via her other athletic passion.

Even though Reuter said her running career takes precedent over any other athletic endeavor, she said she relishes this time of year when she can compete within more of a team-oriented environment for the Reds. Eaton figures to again be a state basketball title contender in Class 4A.

“It’s a little bit of a challenge to balance basketball and running,” said Reuter, who averaged 11.2 points, 2 assists and 1.5 steals per game on the hardwood a season ago. “But, I’m very excited to get back on the court. There is something that is just so fun about supporting each other, those fun game nights, the rivalries and the atmosphere — all of it.”
