The most impressive thing about the Chicago Bulls’ 6-1 start is that their projected leading scorer hasn’t even stepped on the court.
Before Josh Giddey came out nearly averaging a triple-double, Coby White was primarily seen as the team’s most likely All-Star candidate. The 2024-25 campaign saw the 25-year-old play the best basketball of his career, and he only looked better and better once the team moved on from Zach LaVine. The Bulls’ 17-9 finish to the season was largely thanks to White’s dynamic three-level scoring ability. He averaged 24.5 points with 4.3 assists after the All-Star break, and he did so by shooting a smidge under 50.0 percent from the field.
Whether it be a 44-point outburst against Orlando or three-straight games with 35+ in mid-March, White showed on multiple occasions that he could carry the Bulls’ offense. All things considered, this is what makes his inevitable return even more exciting. Already holding the league’s 8th-highest offensive rating to begin the year, the Bulls still get to add their most individually talented bucket-getter back into the mix.
Now, could one make an argument that adding someone who deserves the ball as much as White might mess up the team’s flow? Sure. But there is also a difference between deserving the ball and needing the ball. White has never been the kind of player who must handle the rock every possession. He has experience playing on-and-off-ball roles throughout his career, and he is fresh off showing flashes that a backcourt marriage with Josh Giddey CAN work.
It’s not as if White’s usage rating after the All-Star break was sky high. The number sat at 26.6 percent, which ranked inside the NBA’s 77th percentile, per Cleaning the Glass. He was able to score a career-high and play some of his best basketball without dominating possessions. Heck, that’s a big reason why the Bulls’ identity is what it is heading into this season. Billy Donovan built this offense largely around a style that works in the best interest of both White and Giddey. Playing fast, attacking the rim in transition, and splashing catch-and-shoot threes has always been White’s bread-and-butter.
This is why I absolutely believe White when he spoke about his eventual return with the media on Thursday afternoon. Asked about his eventual integration back into the starting lineup, the guard didn’t sound the slightest bit concerned about halting the team’s momentum:
“I think the way I play fits perfectly with the way we play,” White told reporters (h/t Joel Lorenzi on X). “Quick decisions. I’m not a ball stopper. I don’t hold the ball. I just play to win. I don’t see any problems or anything like that when it comes to me getting back to it. It’s just finding a rhythm. I haven’t played in a long time … being patient with myself.”
As White said, might it take some time for him to look like the player we remember? Sure, and that is to be expected after sitting on the sidelines since August. However, as far as playing the brand of basketball that has been so successful for this team so far, it’s hard to envision a world where his return ruffles any feathers.
Coby White’s Return Looming for Chicago Bulls
Speaking of which, when the heck will this return be? Head coach Billy Donovan still put a two-week timeline on White ahead of the Bulls’ game against the 76ers. While Coby White was seen doing a little on-court conditioning work at practice Thursday, he still appears a handful of days away from participating in any true five-on-five action.
The good news is that White shared he has done a lot of running and has yet to experience any setbacks with his calf. In other words, the tightness that made the Bulls pump the brakes before the regular season has seemingly subsided. White also pointed toward around this time next week when he might officially rejoin practice. Nevertheless, it remains unclear how many full practices the training staff will want to see before they throw him into the fire.
No specific target date for a Coby return yet, but both he and Billy identified the 3 day period between Pistons (Nov 13) and Jazz games (Nov 16) when he could rejoin practiceCoby is doing "a lot" of running, 2on2, 3on3 with some players and PD staff
— Will Gottlieb (@Will_Gottlieb) November 6, 2025I always think it’s always important to note that White is in the thick of a contract year. Especially after his strong finish to the 2024-25 campaign, there is a belief that he could be one of the most highly coveted players on the unrestricted free agency market. With that in mind, it’s not surprising that both he and the Bulls have apparently played it extra slow with his return.
