Prince William cares about climate change – but this is what he should actually do

Prince William called on world leaders to “be the generation that turned the tide” in a speech that has cemented his position as a passionate climate advocate.

“We must transform the way we power our lives, produce our goods, move from place to place and care for our land,” he told delegates at the COP30 conference, which is currently being held in Brazil.

The speech was William’s first appearance at the annual UN Climate Change Conference, as he filled in for his father, the King, who usually attends the event.

It marked a step-up in his climate diplomacy at a moment when the global consensus on climate change appears to be crumbling.

But while William is saying all the right things, his words will only go so far.

It’s hard not to feel pessimistic heading into this year’s COP conference, with countries increasingly turning away from their climate goals and the US skipping the whole affair entirely.

The UK also dealt a major blow on the eve of the summit by announcing it won’t contribute to a new flagship fund to protect the world’s remaining tropical rainforest.

William is restricted on what he can do in the confines of the constitutional monarchy and will be careful not to be seen to be criticising the British government’s decision.

However, there are things the Prince can learn from his father, who carefully toed the line between his role in the Royal Family and as a passionate environmentalist while he was Prince of Wales.

The King’s choice language – for example calling climate change deniers the “headless chicken brigade” – sometimes landed him in trouble, but also helped keep the crisis in the headlines.

William has never been as outspoken as his father, but his COP speech is perhaps a signal that he is willing to push these boundaries.

He praised the Tropical Forests Forever Fund as “a visionary step toward valuing nature’s role in climate stability” despite the news the UK would not be investing.

While subtle, the words are a signal the Prince is not happy with the UK Government’s retreat from its position of climate leadership.

As world leaders increasingly shy away from bold climate action, it’s time passionate advocates like the Prince find a way to step up.
